English 101
With the return of more on-campus classes this year, life is starting to change back to pre-
pandemic life. After almost 2 years of attending online classes, I had gotten used to staying at
home and doing nothing while listening to lectures for about 6 hours long. Everything was
accessible to me and I didn’t have to spend as much effort doing other things. However, now that
school is being moved back to traditional learning, slowly but surely, I find it hard despite having
attended school for the previous 17 years of my life in person. The 2 years during Covid-19 have
made such a big impact on the way I approach a school. The most challenging about going back
to school was trying to make new friends. During the online classes, it was hard to make friends
as everything was online and there wasn’t much chance to get friendly with your classmates. I
wasn’t sure how to approach new people and how to make conversations with people unless it
was through text. Another big challenge I face now is the issue of masks. Many people walk
around without masks and despite having grown up with masks not being the norm, it has
become extremely weird and uncomfortable to see someone walking around without a mask. I
would also say that work online was a lot easier than paperwork which I find harder to do as it is
hard to concentrate. On the issue of concentration, being at home was a lot quieter and more
peaceful than being at school with a bunch of people. I think my strengths this semester was
being able to come up with many different ideas and being able to write a lot. The writing project
I felt the most confident in was the narrative essay as it allowed me to talk about myself. Some of
my writing challenges were putting my ideas on paper and citing. I wasn’t extremely sure if I
was citing correctly or whether my grammar was right or not. Despite having lots of ideas, I
struggle to put my thoughts on paper fluently and to make sure the reader of my writing can
understand what I’m trying to convey. The writing that took most of my time was the Research
and Argument Project as I wasn’t sure what I should talk about. I struggled with organizing the
ideas and making sure the paragraphs are smooth. I struggle to make a good thesis and follow it
up with good examples and evidence. My writing process did change a bit like this year I was
just following along with the directions given to us and the paperwork we had to do. For
example, we wrote drafts and would have to print extra for our classmates, and then we would
edit it. I believe this is a more efficient writing process than my previous one. Having learned
online for a while, there weren’t many clear instructions given on what I should be doing and
what I shouldn’t be. There weren’t many interactions between students and teachers since
everyone was going through difficulties. I like how this class allows for more interaction when
we are reviewing each other’s papers and giving feedback. Prior to the writing process change, I
only wrote the draft, edited it, and finished the project I was completing. However, I like the
amount of time that was given to us for the assignments in order for us to get a grasp of it.
Professor Rogness was also extremely helpful and friendly in that she would have PowerPoint in
order to show how to do an assignment and she would also give out handouts to make sure
people are engaged and that they are participating which forces them to get an understanding.
Then the activities she gives us allow us to research for the information. Allowing us to review
one another draft is extremely helpful as it gives us insight from a different point of view and it
allows us to try to revise and edit until it’s complete. Another assignment that was helpful in this
class was the reading responses that gave us examples of how to write an essay before we were
to write one. Overall, despite issues outside of school, Professor Rogness made this class a fun
