98-1289-8 EMPI 34PICT-3. Carb Initial Set-Up and Adjustment
‘The target Idle Speed fortis carburetor |s 850-900 RPM, This adjustment willbe obtained by adjusting the Volume and By-Pass Screws = NOT the
screw on the Throttle Arm. Both the Volume Control Screw and By-Pass Screw are located together on the lt side ofthe carburetor just above
the Idle Cut-Off Solenoid. The larger screw on the top fs the By-Pass Screw. The lower, smaller screw isthe Volume Control Screw.

1, Make certain that all hoses ae in place and that everything is sealed properly to avoid vacuum leaks. 99% ofall idle problems are caused
bya vacuum leak. A vacuum leak will make carburetor adjustment impossible,
2. Install the aie leaner and any/all breather lines
3. The Fast Idle Adjuster (Throttle Screw) does NOT control the Idle Speed.
2. With the choke in the fll epan position andthe stepped cam at its lowest
point, place 2.003" fester gauge ~or a piece of copy paper — between the
lowest step of the Choke Fast idle Cam and the Fast ale Adjusting Screw,
Turn the screw in slowly until there is drag on the feeler gauge.
‘Then remove the feeler gauge.
& Turn the screw IN exactly 1 turn
‘Thats the ONLY setting/adjustment this screw will need.
DO NOT attempt any other adjustments to this serew,
4. The Volume Control serew (smaller screw} adjusts only the amount
‘of Ar Volume~ NOT the fuel volume, Serewing it IN reduces air
making the mixture RICHER, Screwing it OUT increases air—making
the moture LEANER
‘a, Screw the Volume Control Screw iN gently unt it bottoms
(Out- then turn the serew OUT exactly 2% turns
“This the initial setting,
5. Adjusting the By-Pass Screw (Jarger screw) controls the volume of air
‘going by the By-Pass Screw ~ this sets the Idle Spee.
Screw the By-Pass Screw IN gently untl it bottoms out
‘then turn the screw OUT 2 turns.
“Tiss the intial setting.65. withthe choke fully open, start the engine and run uni its warm.
‘a, Tumthe Volume Control Screw out slowly to obtain the fastest, smoothes idle speed {shouldbe within ¥ turn in or out from,
your 23 turn nt setting).
b, The turn the Volume Control Screw back IN slouly until the engine speed drops by 20-30RPM. You will heer the engine speed
drop~at as litle as 1/8 turn,
7. Naw set your Idle Speed to 850-900RPM (950 for vehicles with Automate Trans) by turing the By-Pass Screw in (or out). Faster idle Is
better than slower so as to prevent overheating
8 Ropoat Steps 6b and 7 to make final adjustment
9, Accelerator Pump Adjustment Screw - With the engine turned OFF
and the aie cleaner removed, ook down the barrel of the carburetor,
activate the throttle arm and watch forthe gas spraying rom the
Spray Tube, Gas should spray from the tube the MOMENT the arm
starts moving. iit sprays late, the engine will hesitate when
accelerating. Adjust by loosening the Accelerator Pump Adjustment
Serow, then acjusting the stroke ofthe rod to time the spray with
‘the movernent of the throttle arm,
10, Ifyou have followed ths procedure and the engine will not idle, most Ikely the cause is 2 vacuum leak. Start from the top and repeat.
Check the adjustment screws to make certain that you have not applied too much aressure seating them - possibly stripping the treads.
If your engine has a performance exhaust or ather madifiation..or ifthe blond of gasoline in your area features level of Ethanol higher than
10%, the carburetor may require larger dle and Main jets. We have included a 60 Idle Jet and 2 130 Main Jet that wil rchen the mixture from the
factory jetting should you or your mechanic daterrsne that your engine requires 3 richer mixture
