TECHNICAL DRAWING 2

Quarter 1
Self- Learning Module 1
Title : Proper Care and Manipulation of
Drawing tools, Instruments and Materials
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Technical Drawing Self-Learning Module 1 on Proper care and

manipulation of drawing tools, instruments and materials!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its Mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Technical Drawing 2 Self-Learning Module 1 on Proper Care

and Manipulation of Drawing Tools, Instruments and Materials!
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectation - These are what you will be able to know after

completing the lessons in the module

Pre-test - This will measure your prior knowledge and the

concepts to be mastered throughout the lesson.

Recap - This section will measure what learnings and skills

that you understand from the previous lesson.

Lesson- This section will discuss the topic for this module.

Activities - This is a set of activities you will perform.

Wrap Up- This section summarizes the concepts and

applications of the lessons.

Valuing-this part will check the integration of values in the

learning competency.

Post-test - This will measure how much you have learned from
the entire module.
EXPECTATIONS

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. explain the different drawing tools, instruments and materials;
2. practice proper care and manipulation of tools and instruments; and
3. appreciate the importance of having well maintained tools and
instruments.

PRE–TEST

LESSON

Proper Care and Manipulation of Drawing Tools, Instruments and Materials

There are some important training values necessary in learning technical
drawing to supplement the graphic language. A beginner or student of technical
drawing should not only learn and understand the fundamental principles of
drawing, but should also possess the aptitude and ability to execute the work with
reasonable skill, form and maintain the correct habits in the manipulation and
caring of the different drawing tools, instruments and materials.

Drawing Tools, Instruments and Materials

1. Drawing board is made of season wood
with a straight working edge. This
maybe separate board or drawing may
be done on a table top.

2. T-square is used for drawing horizontal

lines and for guiding the triangles when
drawing other lines. The head of the
T-square is pressed on working edge of the
drawing board on which it slides as it is used.

3. Triangles are available in two types;

30°x60°x90° triangle and 45°x45°x90°
triangle. The sides should be tested for
accuracy, it must always be in contact with
and guided by the straight edge of the T-
square. It used for drawing vertical and
inclined lines.

4. Pencils - high quality graphite lead pencils in

various hardness and softness. It is the basic
instrument used in drawing. They come in
graded numbers and letters from 2B to 7B
which are very soft and black, used for
technical sketching or freehand work; B to 3H,
the soft-hard or medium grade, used for
general purpose work; and from 4H to 9H, the
hard to hardest, are used for lines where work
requires extreme accuracy.
5. Eraser - used for cleaning and removing unwanted lines
and smudges in a drawing.

6. Erasing Shield - an instrument usually made steel

or celluloid. It is used to protect other drawing when
making an erasure.

7. Protractor- used to layout measurements of

angles not obtained by triangle.

8. Compass- a drawing instrument used for drawing

arcs and circles.

9. Dividers- an instrument like compass, is the

divider, used to divide distances into a number of
equal parts and transferring or setting off a series
of distances.

10. French Curve - certain drawing requires

mechanical curves other than arcs and circles,
to draw this irregular curves, French curve is
used.

11. Scale- are available in various cross-

sectional shapes, such as triangular or flat
surfaces, it is used for measuring and scaling
process.
12. Tapes- used for fastening drawing paper on the
drawing board.

13. Dusting brush- used to dust off eraser crumbs and

excess pencil graphite.

Proper Care and Maintenance of Drawing Tools and Instruments

1. Keep your instruments and equipment always clean.
2. Wipe your tools and instruments using a piece of soft cotton to avoid
scratches.
3. Keep your drawing tools and instruments in proper places before and after
using.

ACTIVITIES

True or False.
Directions. Write T if the statement is correct and F if the statement is incorrect.
Write your answer on the space provided.
_____ 1. The triangle is used in drawing horizontal lines.
