Write a short summary of the story "And the Soul Shall Dance"

And a Soul Shall Dance, a book written in 1977, tells the story of the challenging times a
young Japanese American girl, her family, and her parents go through. This short tale
describes the various hardships these families had to face while trying to survive in a
predominantly white America during the Great Depression, as well as the consequences it
had on the main characters.
The narrator of And the Soul Shall Dance introduces and recalls the characters at the
beginning of the story. We discover right away that the narrator was nine years old, Kiyoko
Oka was fourteen, and her younger brother was four. The narrator then discusses her own
family before moving on to the Okas. The Oka family lived close by and her father was a
farmer. The Oka family did not interact much since they were an outcast, childless, and a
family that was looked upon.
