INTRODUCTION

1.1 HISTORY OF COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION

For this purpose, a Civil Service Commission was setup in 1854 in London and
competitive examinations were started in 1855. Henry A. Fischel. An American
businessman and philanthropist, was the first person who invented exams, and Imperial
Examinations. The study titled “Students Awareness about the competitive examination”
mainly focused on students to create attention towards various government examination
such as TNPSC, IBPS, SSC, RRB and UPSC conducting under government departments
which helps to step up their career into strong enough. To structure this study in a
qualitative manner, the exploratory research methodology is used through questionnaire
survey. The survey is conducted with 120 respondents and the convenience sampling is
treated in this study. The facts for this study are collected using both primary and
secondary data collection method and it is analysed and interpreted using statistical tools
like percentage analysis asking and chi-square test.

1.2 ABOUT COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION

A competitive examination is an examination where candidates are ranked based on
their knowledge, will power shows in the examination. There are various competitive
examinations held for various posts at different sectors. Some of the competitive exams
are held by Colleges, Universities or Institutions as entrance exams to select eligible
candidates for particular courses or positions. Other type of exams like TNPSC (Tamil
Nadu Public Service Commission), SSC (Staff Selection Commission), UPSC (Union
Public Service Commission), RRB (Railway Recruitment Board), IBPS (Institute of
Banking Personnel Selection), are the examinations for fulfilling required positions in
public sectors. In this research, the government examinations under taken by the study
determine student awareness and attitude towards it. These various selections in public
sector have some eligibility criteria or instructions in conducting and selecting candidates
to attend exam and positions vacant. In that same way there was an easy criterion to be
follow for preparing exam or simply say steps to prepare for those government
examinations.
If you have written any examination before or planning to take those exams in near
future but don’t have idea how to prepare for the exams, then following steps will help for
making the preparation into best way along with expecting fair amount of luck. The steps
are,

1.3 STEPS OF PREPARATION

1.3.1. REFERENCE, IS THE BEST TEST FOR YOU

Before choosing the type of government exam to attend or before preparation

begins for that exam, check whether the exam you selected suits for you in some eligibility
criteria like education level, percentage of marks required, grade point required or need any
experience, eligibility in age level so on that applies to exam selected.

1.3.2. GO BACK WITH YOUR FUNDAMENTAL

Once you come to know that you qualify for the exam chooses, it is important to
push up on fundamentals with text book, notes studied at grade school either it is
Mathematics, Science, English or with the subjects like Social Studies, General Knowledge.

1.3.3 BE UPTO DATE

Keen your knowledge up to date in area of general awareness, current affairs and
also check frequently on changes in the examination’s announcement or any other upcoming
exams might suitable for your qualification.

1.3.4. SET TIMING FOR PREPARATION

You can also prepare without pay for any coaching class if you aware of
complete syllabus. In such government exams timing in answering questions is necessary.
To get familiar with syllabus and to make fast answering, allot time yourself for mock test by
sample questions at home and also take free online exams by yourself.

1.3.5. BE POSITIVE AND GO EASY ON YOURSELF

First be thinking positive and have faith in yourself. Do yoga and regular
exercise to boost your mental ability as well as physical strength. Stay healthy while
preparing for exams. You should not lose your faith if you fail in first attempt, instead be
patient and seek help from seniors. Then the result of test will be all that you do.
1.4 ORAL AND INFORMAL EXAMINATIONS
Informal, unofficial, and non-standardized tests and testing systems have existed
throughout history. For example, tests of skill such as archery contests have existed in
China since the Zhou dynasty (or, more mythologically, Yao). Oral exams were
administered in various parts of the world including ancient China and Europe.
A precursor to the later Chinese imperial examinations was in place since the Han
dynasty, during which the Confucian characteristic of the examinations was determined.
However, these examinations did not offer an official avenue to government
appointment, the majority of which were filled through recommendations based on
qualities such as social status, morals, and ability.

1.5 SCOPE

examinations.
 This study may influence the awareness of sources available for various
competitive examinations.

any related question in the exam. Timely revision helps reduce the anxiety and stress levels a
student is likely to have during the exams.
1.8.2 Set Targets for Yourself: You must adhere to a strict routine when learning. Make
sure your objectives align with your academic schedule and other responsibilities.
1.8.3 Practice Time Management: Making a weekly calendar will enable you to see how
much time you devote to your daily and weekly academic and extra-curricular activities as
well as how much free time you have before taking on any new responsibilities. Schedule
some time to relax and get your thoughts clean.
1.8.4 Refer to the study materials: Lessons, notes, chapters, questions and answers, videos,
and past papers are all included in the study resources. It also covers learning methods from
other sources, such as books and websites, asking friends for assistance, and getting
assistance from others.
1.8.5 Mock exams: It helps to be familiar with the format of the test. Mock exams are
designed to give the applicant a sense of the exam. It is simpler to solve test issues when
their preparation is examined. But answering all of them in a short amount of time is
challenging. Students can improve their performance in the real test environment by
attempting to solve sample problems in a certain amount of time.
1.8.6 Exam day: Make sure you review all of the material from the previous two years in the
weeks leading up to the test. Be calm before and during the exam; answer the questions
slowly. Check your hall ticket and any necessary stationeries twice. Keep in mind that if you
gave it you’re all during the previous year, you have nothing to be afraid of. Only your effort
will determine your outcome; the rest is up to chance.

1.9 PREPARATION FOR COMPETITIVE EXAMS

1.9.1 Plan Well: A well-laid plan means half of the job is done. Familiarize yourself with a
schedule of exams that you are attempting. Calculate time and create a proper study plan.
1.9.2 Time Management: It is important to manage your time wisely and smartly in order to
achieve success. In order to avoid chaos and distractions in your daily routine separate some
time for study, recreation, and various other activities. Try to make the optimum use of your
time.
1.9.3 Choose subjects wisely: It is important to wisely choose the subject you find yourself
most comfortable in. Many students have described this as a crucial point in order to attain
success.
1.9.4 Shorter Study: Studying till the last minute would only lead to stress and exhaustion
and even confusion. Before formulating your study plan, pick the examination syllabus and
measure your comfort level in each section. Students should give extra time to weak areas on
a daily basis rather than in one go.
1.9.5 Mock Papers: Practicing previous year sample papers would be really helpful. This
will give you an idea about the exam pattern and would force you to practice within the given
time frame. Solving sample test papers would also improve your speed and time management
skills.
1.9.6 Motivation: Draw motivation from teachers, seniors, family members and so on.
Always remember that motivation will always inspire you to attain goals. In addition,
interviews of past toppers in competitive examinations should be carefully studied and
important tips and instructions should be implemented.

 We need more academy in our society.

 Each and every student must have the mindset at least a little to serve the society.
 Everyone completing graduation must attend at least competitive exam.
 It is not about the educational system alone, but the knowledge that they possess one
who builds it can clear it.
 UPSC could be conducted every six months.
 It is suggested to motivate, create attention and improve confidence on themselves
through free coaching classes by government.
5.3 CONCLUSIONS:
This project on “A study on student perception in competitive examination among
the college students” thus helped me to have a clear idea on what students actually perceive
about competitive examination. Now a days competitive exam is become more and more
important and precious part of student’s life. Most of the Karaikudi region part comes in a
rural area, but there are many students who are aspirants. Those student who succeed in their
career always had a contribution of college and city. So all the area and colleges of Karaikudi
region should aware of that and give some extra contribution to the aspirants so they can fly.
The attitude of students towards competitive exam are very positive and the perception that
made regarding a facility provided by college and city is the result of what they get till now.
