Philosophy of Existentialism
- Soren Kierkegaard He is a Christian

- Born in 5th of May 1813

- Died in 11th of November 1855

- Providing the foundation of 19th-century


EXISTENTIALISM

- known as the father of EXISTENTIALISM


- What is the meaning of life?
A sense of meaning is something that we all
need, and everyone should spend some time
understanding how to make their lives
meaningful.

- Existentialism is a philosophy that explores


this problem of human existence with a focus
on the individual who begins in a meaningless
world to create some form of meaning in the
world.

• Is a fierce expression of the absurd

• All this scratches the surface of


existentialism

• Can be a guide to exploring thinkers,


with basic Ideas like authenticity,
individuality, subjectivity, freedom, and
responsibility in order

• To understand the meaning of our lives.


The Idea of Freedom
• A necessary part of the human race

• The purpose to act by being true to yourself

• Kierkegaard focused on the individual

• The subjective truth of the individual being the


ultimate irrational experience
The Idea of Thrownness
• We are all thrown into the world, into a
particular family, at a particular moment in
human history

• Task we decide to engage in is set for us by


the particular realism we were born with

• No prior knowledge or individual opinion

• They believe that the “essence precedes


existence “
Existence precedes essence
• All philosophers agreed that “existence
precedes essence.”

• It is up to us to determine who we are, by the


way, we choose to live

• No specific path supposed to follow

• essence gives you purpose

• becomes a somewhat terrifying realization


How to attain a meaningful life
• the individual is not free

• search for truth involves a personal choice

• detaches from prevailing cultural attitudes

• choice between alternatives and


subsequent self-discipline

• Characterized by "pleasure“
• The main goal is to satisfy one's desires
• HEDONISM
• Lacks commitment to ideals
• Lead to boredom
• Realizes that the desires cannot be fully
satisfied
• Faced with 2 choices

Ethical Stage
• result of an individual's decision
• The main goal of this stage is to live by moral
standards
• The self is no longer the center of everything
• realize that “he does not always do what he
must do
• leads to feelings of guilt and despair
• Faced with 2 choices

Religious Stage
• have accepted the fact that we always
make mistakes
• only God can eliminate feelings of guilt
and despair
• A leap of faith
• This choice should be based on a
conscious and correct decision
• individual finds true fulfillment
