Year Six Vocabulary

Police:
1. Surveillance - Monitoring of activities for the purpose of information
gathering or control.
2. Subpoena - A writ ordering a person to attend a court.
3. Apprehend - To arrest someone for a crime.
4. Testimony - A formal written or spoken statement, especially one given in a
court of law.
5. Perpetrator - A person who carries out a harmful, illegal, or immoral act.
6. Allegation - A claim or assertion that someone has done something illegal
or wrong, typically one made without proof.
7. Contraband - Goods that have been imported or exported illegally.
8. Incarceration - The state of being confined in prison.
9. Jurisdiction - The official power to make legal decisions and judgments.
10.Exoneration - The action of officially absolving someone from blame or
fault.
Environmental Issues:
1. Deforestation - The clearing of trees, transforming a forest into cleared
land.
2. Biodiversity - The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or
ecosystem.
3. Conservation - The action of conserving something, in particular natural
resources.
4. Carbon footprint - The amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon
compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels.
5. Global warming - A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the
earth's atmosphere.
6. Sustainability - The avoidance of the depletion of natural resources to
maintain ecological balance.
7. Renewable energy - Energy that is collected from resources that are
naturally replenished on a human timescale.
8. Erosion - The process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other
natural agents.
9. Extinction - The state or process of a species, family, or larger group being
or becoming extinct.
10.Pollution - The presence in or introduction into the environment of a
substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects.

organizing troops for active service.
2. Armistice - An agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting
for a certain time; a truce.
3. Espionage - The practice of spying or of using spies, typically by
governments to obtain political and military information.
4. Insurgency - An active revolt or uprising.
5. Coup - A sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government.
6. Disarmament - The reduction or withdrawal of military forces and weapons.
7. Sabotage - Deliberate damage or destruction of equipment, materials, or
installations.
8. War crimes - Violations of the laws or customs of war as defined by
international agreements, for example, the Geneva Conventions.
9. Deterrence - The action of discouraging an action or event through instilling
doubt or fear of the consequences.
10.Conscription - Compulsory enlistment for state service, typically into the
armed forces.
Excursions:
1. Itinerary - A planned route or journey.
2. Guide - A person who shows the way to others, especially through

3. Adventure - An unusual and exciting or daring experience.

Urban Contrast with Rural:
1. Metropolis - A very large and densely populated industrial and commercial
city.
2. Skyscraper - A very tall building of many stories.
3. Congestion - The state of being congested.
4. Suburb - An outlying district of a city, especially a residential one.
5. Urbanization - The process of making an area more urban.
6. Countryside - The land and scenery of a rural area.
7. Serenity - The state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled.
8. Agriculture - The science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the
soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food,
wool, and other products.
9. Commute - Travel some distance between one's home and place of work
on a regular basis.
10.Infrastructure - The basic physical and organizational structures and
facilities needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.
