Future of Ships

Introduction
Good morning! Madam and my dear friends, my
name is Danika Fernando and I am accompanied
with,

 Mr. Migara Sampath

 Pansilu Kulasekara and
 Udayanga Fernando.

Today as group 2, we are here to uncover a new

area for you. What will be the “Future of ships” going
to be?

As we, all know the international shipping industry is a

rapidly growing industry. It is responsible for the
carriage of around 90% of world trade. As per the
reports, the world seaborne trade is growing rapidly
at the rate of 12%. You all can see on the table
published by IHS Global Insight shows seaborne trade
is growing at a rate of more than the world economy
and the world population.
Therefore, we are going to share with you some
important innovative ship concepts as,

 Autonomous cargo ships

 Hydrogen-powered ships and,
 The NYK Super Eco Ship 2050

First, we are going to present you with some

information about autonomous cargo ships for that I
am going to invite Mr. Migara Sampath to continue
from here

Thank you!
Thank you, Danika! And good morning everybody,
My name is Migara Sampath,

Autonomous cargo ships,

Those are also known as autonomous container ships
or autonomous maritime surface ships simply we can
call that “MASS”.

They are unmanned vessels that can transport

containers or bulk cargo through navigable waters
with little or no human intervention.

Different approaches and levels of autonomy can be

achieved through remote monitoring and control
from a nearby manned ship, from a shore-based
control center, or through artificial intelligence and
machine learning, allowing the ship to determine its
course of action.

Autonomous vessels are divided into 4 major types as

shown in the slide,

– Ships with multiple automated processes that still

require the presence of humans on board

– Remotely controlled ships that don’t require the

presence of the full crew
– Remotely controlled ships that can operate without
a crew

– Fully self-steering ships with an operating system

capable of making decisions

The ship is connected to an onshore control center or

an AI system. Sensors that are placed on the ship
provide data, which will be able to supply data for
navigational use. Other data such as deep-sea
navigation and traffic systems from onshore locations
will help the vessel plot a safe course. The data would
then be processed by artificial intelligence systems
either on board the vessel itself or at an onshore
location, proposing an optimal route and decision
pattern.

As of today, there are several autonomous cargo ship

projects were in development. Yara Birkeland is
recorded as the world’s first autonomous cargo ship.

Then we move on to Hydrogen powered ships for that

I like to invite Pansilu Kulasekara to continue from
here.
Thank you! Mr. Migara and Good morning everyone,
My name is Pansilu Kulasekara,

Hydrogen-powered ships
A hydrogen ship is a hydrogen-fueled ship, power-
assisted by an electric motor that gets its electricity
from a fuel cell Or uses hydrogen fuel in an internal
combustion engine. Simply we can use Hydrogen
instead of heavy fuel oil and diesel as fuel. Therefore
it is a great step forward in the zero-emission shipping
industry.

When we researched this concept we realized the

day we can expect a greener shipping industry is not
so far away from us.

MF "Hydra", the world’s first hydrogen-operated ferry,

was built for Norled at Weston Yards in Olen and
designed by LMG Marin.

Great, now we can move into the final innovative

ship that we are going to talk about.
The NYK Super Eco Ship 2050
In 2018, the IMO and the shipping community made
a strong commitment: By 2050, greenhouse gases
from shipping must be reduced by at least 50% from
2008 levels. With these words, Japanese shipping
company NYK launched their challenge for CO₂-
neutral shipping in 2050.

Back in 2009, Elomatic conducted a technology

study for NYK to reduce energy consumption and
emissions. The work culminated in a futuristic
container vessel, the NYK SUPER ECO SHIP 2030. This
project received much attention and won awards for
its environmentally friendly design. The onboard
energy consumption of the Super Eco Ship 2030 was
reduced by 40% from the best-in-class vessel at the
time.

Keep this in your mind and now I am going to invite

Udayanga to continue from here.
Thank you! Pansilu, Good morning everyone,

As Pansilu mentioned NYK super eco line launched a

concept ship called the NYK SUPER ECO SHIP 2030.

Almost 10 years later, the time come to update the

study and raise the bar, while aligning it with and
exceeding targets set by the IMO and International
Panel for Climate Change. While a wide range of
vessel types was addressed, the showcase vessel for
the updated study was a Pure Car and Truck Carrier.
The ship is known as the NYK SUPER ECO SHIP 2050.

Instead of fossil fuels, the ship would be powered by

solar energy and hydrogen produced from
renewable energy sources

By utilizing a deep toolbox and touching all fields of

ship design and vessel operation, a 70% energy
saving compared to today’s benchmark was
achieved. Significantly, the potential of emission-free
operation was reached, depending on the source of
primary fuel.

Finally, I think you have got some valuable

knowledge about future ships. It is great to see as the
industry is going to be more eco-friendly and more
efficient than past.

Thank you for listening for begin to end of our

presentation and now you are free to ask any
questions if there is any.
