Christianity And Paganism In Beowulf
In eighth century Anglo Saxon society, an important transition occurred from the use
paganism to the new traditions of Christianity. Beowulf is an epic poem in which the
main character Beowulf has an internal conflict regarding two religions. To further
understand why Beowulf has both Christian and pagan influences you must first
understand the Anglo Saxon culture. In the eighth century, Christianitywas evolving into
the orthodox religion for the people. However, aspects of pagan culture were still being
observed, but to a lesser extent. This connection led to many works of the time being of
both religions. Beowulfwas written by an anonymous Christian monk; the ideals of the
epic poem represents Christianity, paganism, and coexists as both faiths.
One of the first Christian reference in lines 20 3: Conceived by a pair of those monster
born/ By God, punished forever for the crime/ Of Abel s death... Refers to the biblical
story of Cain and Abel in which Cain murders his brother out of jealousy. This is the
supposed first death in human and biblical history. Grendel is referred to as a descendant
of Cain, in which the Devil tricks into sinning and committing the first murder. Lines 82
6 reflects Hrothgar s throne and its protection: In Herot, when night hid him, he never
/ Dared to touch king Hrothgar s glorious/ Throne protected by God God,/ Whose love
Grendel could not know. Another reference to God in which the author uses Christianity.

Comparing The Israelites And The Puritans
The Puritans believe they are morally superior to everyone else. The Puritans are about
to leave England. They are Israelites is what they are. They are fleeing Egypt. Good
Riddance! Next stop, land of milk/honey(4). Vowell uses a simile to compare the Puritans
to the Israelites in order to reveal how the Puritans consider themselves. The Old
Testament Israelites, references specifically the Israelites that escaped from Egypt in the
Book of Exodus. After the population of Jews in Egypt had become so numerous the
Pharaoh feared what they might be able to do and put them into slavery. The Israelites
eventually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea and eventually make it to land God
had gifted them, the land of Canaan. The Puritans compare to the Israelites because they
too felt some religious persecution. Catholic rulers like Mary I persecuted Protestants
and had many executed. The Puritans also flee from a land not as pure as themselves in
order to start anew. Cotton himself tells the Puritans that they are God s chosen, and
America is their Canaan. The Israelites inspire the Puritans to get away. The Old
Testament Israelites are to the Puritans what the blueswas to the Rolling Stones a source
of inspiration, a renewable resource of riffs(2). Vowell uses an analogy to compare two
unlike things like Puritans and the Rolling Stones. The blues is a genre of music
originating in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century.

her worldview through the story s dialogue. In this dialogue, she both instructs and

she has for her daughter within her world. The Mother s Worldview The mother in Girl

In Girl, the mother makes three separate and seemingly hostile accusations towards
her daughter about her becoming a slut. and not like the slut you are so bent on
becoming is a common way for the mother to draw a comparison between what the
daughter s behavior should and should not be like. These strong feelings most likely
arise from the mother s desire for respect in the community, but are also influenced by
religion. We know the mother is religious because of the mother s comment is it true
that you sing benna in Sunday school? . Sunday school is a time for children to learn
about their religion, and the mother s concern about benna due to an aversion to
irreligious music. A focus on religion was common on the islands of Antigua where the
author of Girl grew up. From this, it is a short jump in logic to assume that the mother s
concern about her daughter becoming a slut are originating from the local

this is an unethical decision. The doctors took advantage of Charlie, knowing he was
mentally challenged they told him they had a surgery that would make him smart. The
doctors never told him of the downsides of the operation. For one the Hippocratic Oath
