Koko, a nutritionist from FNRI, wishes to compare the number of carbohydrates in one

serving of two low-carbohydrate foods. At 15% level of significance, does pasta have more
carbohydrates than bread in terms of number of calories? Based on your answer, which type
of food would you recommend if a person wished to limit carbohydrates?

1. State the Null and Alternative Hypothesis

Ho : The median of number of carbohydrates in pasta and bread are equal.
(η0 = η1 )

H1 : The median of number of carbohydrates in pasta is greater than the median of

number of carbohydrates in bread.
(η0 > η1 )

2. Set the Level of Significance or Alpha Level (α)

α = 0.15

3. Determine the Test Distribution to Use

Dependent Variables: Number of carbohydrates
Independent Variables: Pasta and Bread
Normality Test:

Since p-value for pasta < 0.15, it follows that the set of data is not normal thus we
will use a non-parametric test
Test Distribution to be used: Mann-Whitney U Test
4. Calculate Test Statistic or p – value

5. Make Statistical Decision

Since p-value > 0.15, we accept Ho

6. Draw Conclusion
There is sufficient evidence to conclude that the median of number of carbohydrates
in pasta and bread are equal.

Based on the result, either the pasta or the bread can be suitable for a low-calorie
based diet.
