Future of Modernization
Future of Modernization SOC/120 May 4, 2013 University of Phoenix Future of
Modernization Modernization in the United States has four traits which were identified
by Peter Berger in 1977. The first trait was the decline of small, isolated communities.
Approximately one hundred years ago there were 40% of Americans living in cities.
Today, 80% of the population lives in cities. The next trait is the expansion of personal
choice. Most people choose their lifestyles instead of allowing others to make that
decision for them. The next trait is the rising amount of diversity in the United States.
Interracial couples are more accepted now then it was even 20 years ago. The fourth trait
is the orientation toward the future and a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Modernization is a worldwide trend, as countries such as Japan and China combine
traditional and modern ways. In Japan they are advanced as far as technology, but there
are still few women that are corporate executives and politicians. In China, contemporary
socialist thinking are mixed with ancient Confucian principles. What took decades or
even centuries to transpire in the West has materialized in a matter of a decade or two in
China (The Pros and Cons of Modernization: Cancer in China, Bill Chameides, 2008).
Other countries, such as Mexico and Saudi Arabia, struggle to move ahead economically
because of the respect they have for their religious beliefs. In short, although we may
think of tradition and modernity as opposites, combinations of traditional and modern are
far from unusual, and they are found throughout the world (Society: The Basics, Eleventh
Edition, by John J. Macionis, Ch 16, pg 495). The consequence of modernization is that
normal traditions will disappear. Some fear this will dehumanize our society. Though
modernization has been successful with diversifying our cultures, increasing our wealth,
and expanding opportunities, the processes of transformation ultimately leaves people
feeling insecure and dejected. The fear is that their jobs will be taken over by computers
which ultimately will prevent them from providing for their families.
Essay Power and Corruption in Macbeth by William
Shakespeare
Nearly all men can stand adversity but if you want to test a man s character, give him
power (Abraham Lincoln). Power is the ultimate force in the universe. Power by
definition is control, controlling everything would make everything go the way that
person wants it to so power is sought. Power is desired by most normal people, people
who aspire to be more than themselves, to rise above the common man and do as they
please. Power appeals to human nature. There are many different types of power, but
the main two are necessary and unnecessary power. Necessary power is that of a
natural cause for example, the lion expresses his power over prey to eat; to survive he
needs to use his power. Humans, on the other hand, do not need oil to survive... Show

In William Shakespeare s play Julius Caesar, power tempts and corrupts Caesar s closest
friends to betray him and lose themselves in the process. Shakespeare was an English
playwright during the renaissance period. Shakespeare wrote several plays throughout
his lifetime in unrhymed iambic pentameter including one hundred and seventy four
sonnets and thirty seven plays. One of Shakespeare s most famous plays is Julius Caesar,
which is a true story about a roman that because of his enormous power is murdered
by his envious friends. Caesar is powerful but he does not abuse his power, he is even
offered the crown, absolute power, and denies it. Cassius is an envious man who sees
that Caesar is better than him, but he cannot take him out himself he plays a fine
Italian hand and corrupts a man of integrity to consummate his foul plot. Brutus is a
close friend of Caesar he loves him dearly, but Brutus is conflicted because he also loves
Rome. Cassius plays on Brutus s love of Rome and convinces him Caesar is bad for
Rome. Cassius illustrates how much power Caesar has by why, man he doth bestride
the narrow world like a colossus, / and we petty men walk under his huge legs / and peep
about to fine ourselves dishonorable graves (I.2.136 139). Cassius says that Caesar is so
powerful that he

Zakheim and Kadish explain two decades ago, there were more than twenty prime
contractors competing for defense contracts while today the government relies on just
six contractors to build its defense systems. Zakheim and Kadish state, The system
largely forgoes competition on price, delivery and performance and replaces it with a
kind of design bureau competition . The report explains that firms such as Boeing and
Lockheed Martin have operated in collaboration on several projects such as the Air Force
s next generation bomber (Zakheim amp; Kadish, 2008). Collaboration of this nature
suggests cooperative equilibrium between the firms to enhance their mutual payoff of
outbidding competitors. With the defense market on the downturn pending major budget
cuts over the next several years, more collaboration strategies are possible for firms to
remain competitive. The existing procurement system encourages bargaining among the
government and bidding firms. When budgets are allocated generously, demand is high
and firms can set their prices higher. Budget cuts decrease demand and increase
bargaining between buyer and seller. Security Industry reports budget deficits subject
contracts to greater 3|Page scrutiny and tougher negotiations making contracts more
difficult to obtain in the coming years (Security Industry, 2010). Defense firms are at the
mercy of the defense budget. In times when the budget is maximized and demand
increases,

Mardi Gras Research Paper
FAT TUESDAY RUN All around Louisiana, the people celebrate Mardi Gras in early
spring. Urban cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge utilize fancy bright lighted
parades, celebrity kings and queens, and shiny beads to celebrate the festivities.
Growing up in south Louisiana, I attended many of these parades in the Big Easy. My
grandparents would tell stories of rural Mardi Grasand the Cajun culture. After hearing
their stories, I decided to attend the courir de Mardi Gras. The courir de Mardi Gras is
a traditional Mardi Gras event held the Tuesday before the catholic lent season in small
rural towns. This is known as Fat Tuesday run.

We rode along on the country side. Farm land stretched along the road for as far as the
eye could see. The majority of the farms grew crops of rice . But this time of year, the
farmers flood the rice fields to farm another delicacy of Cajuns, crawfish. After a short
ride, we reached the first farm. It was a small quaint farm with a small white wooden
house and an old wood barn. The farmer and his wife walked up to the captain. The
captain spoke quietly to the farmer. From what I was told was the captain was asking
the farmer s permission to come on his farm and to offer dancing for any charity. The
riders waiting anticipally for the captain to wave his flag. The flag was suddenly
waved and the riders raced onto the property. The farmer grabbed a chicken from his
coup by the legs. He raised it in the air and released it. Several costumed riders
frantically jumped off of their horses and began chasing the chicken around the farm.
While this was going on, the band began to play a familiar Mardi Gras tune. One of the
costumed men asked the farmer s wife to dance as an offering for their generosity. The
two were stomping , swaying and following the timing of the music. Others joined in the
festivities. Drinking, smiling and laughing occurred, as the riders finally caught the
chicken. Captain cracked his whip and the procession moved to the next farm. The
