Grouping notes and rests | 19
Rests These are the main points to remember about the arrangement of rests:
(1) fyou need to show a complete bar’ est, you should write tke this: | = |
o &€ 7/7 |e 7 le lee la
(Abars rest in 3 is written differently, but you will not need to use this until Grade 4.)
(2) In quadruple time, use a two-beat rest i the first haif of the bar is silent. The same applies to the
second half. For example,
oa gee oe ie
(Everywhere ee, a new beat aways needs a new ret. Look at these examples
Ho 8 8
re |
ap et eal
ay ot | ee |
Pee Sy ey te a) ee |
Pe sve vee Pe |
Se) ee tele ees ei) ee |
(4) Where you need to use rests of lass than a beat, group the notes and rests in half-beats (shown below
by —).
TNads | wrddr dd |
G7 J | wrtdr ed |
Bbri 4 lord bt rd |
(5) Do not use more rests than are needed. For example, write
Bee toy ata |
v x
Brora hl writ rr hl
v x
(6) Groups of notes that can be beamed together can still be beamed together when a rest is used
