LEISURE TIME SURVEY

Everyone would like to have more free time. But what do people do in their free time? The U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics conducted a survey to ask people of different age groups this question. The chart below
compares the results for two groups: millenials and retirees (people above 60 years old). When it comes to
free time, what do these two groups have in common? According to the survey results, not much.

The biggest contrast between these two groups is the amount of reading that they do for leisure. Millenials
spend very little time reading compared to retirees. Retirees also spend twice as much time as working
adults watching TV. Interestingly, the survey showed that both groups spent the same amount of time doing
sports and exercises.

Retirees fill their time with activities to keep themselves occupied. Millenials use their free time to relax after
a hard day’s work. Millenials probably spend much more time socializing and communicating to expand their
circle of friends, while retirees most likely use the time to keep in touch with old friends.

Leisure time is important for everyone. It allows us to rest from the day-to-day stresses of work, school, and
other commitments. And although the survey did not ask this, it is likely that we all would like to have more
time for leisure than we do now.
