Don’t Believe Everything You Hear

We learn many “facts” about people and events in history, but not everything
we hear is true. Here are three stories and the real facts about them.
Story 1: Columbus discovered America
The Facts: For many years, children in America learned in school that
5 Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. What really happened? The
first people came to America from Siberia around 15,000 years ago. Even the
Vikings arrived in America 500 years before Columbus. In fact, when they
came, millions of people were already living there. Columbus only became
famous because he crossed the ocean from Europe to America and back. He told
10 the people in Europe about the new world he discovered and became famous.
Story 2: Napoleon was a short man
The Facts: Napoleon Bonaparte was a famous French military leader1. To this
day, many people think he was short, but he was actually taller than most men
who lived in France at that time. Most French men were between 157 and 167
15 centimeters tall, and Napoleon was 169 centimeters tall. So why do people think
he was short? First, Napoleon usually had tall men around him in order to
protect him, so he often looked shorter than he really was. A second reason is
that famous paintings of Napoleon show him as a small man.
Story 3: Steve Jobs invented the computer
20
The Facts: Steve Jobs made one of the first computers that people could buy and
use at home. However, a British mathematician2, Charles Babbage, actually
invented the first computer over a hundred years before – in the 1830s. He
created a plan for a computer, but he couldn’t afford to build it. It was an
amazing achievement for his time.
