III. GRAMMAR:
PAST SIMPLE
Past simple: form
For regular verbs, we add -ed to the base form of the verb (work–worked) or -d if the verb already ends
in e (move–moved).
In regular one-syllable verbs with a single vowel followed by a consonant, we double the final consonant
when adding -ed to make the past simple:
The bus stopped suddenly.
Who planned this trip?
Past simple: pronunciation of -ed
For regular verbs, there are three possible pronunciations of -ed endings.

/ɪd/ /t/ /d/

after all vowel sounds and after

after all voiceless consonants
after /d/ and /t/ voiced consonants (except /d/)
(except /t/)/k/ /p/ /f/ /s/ /ʃ/ /tʃ/
/m/ /n/ /ŋ/ /l/ /g/ /dʒ/ /z/ /b/ /v/

decided, ended, landed, picked, hopped, laughed, crossed, cried, tried, hurried, weighed, smiled,
started, visited, waited pushed, watched planned, judged, sneezed, lived

Past simple: irregular verbs

Many verbs are irregular. The verb form is the same for all persons (I, you, she, he, it, we, they), and we make
questions and negatives with irregular verbs in the same ways as for regular verbs.
The meal began with soup.
Look what I did!
We flew from New York to Mexico!
She had such a good time.
Past simple: uses
 Definite time in the past
We use the past simple to talk about definite time in the past (often we specify when something happened,
e.g. yesterday, three weeks ago, last year, when I was young):
Did you watch that film yesterday?
He left at the end of November.
When they were young, they hated meat.
 Single or habitual events or states
We use the past simple to talk about single or regular (habitual) events or states in the past.

18
Gia Dinh High school – English Department – Grade 10

He fell off his bike and his friends took him to a doctor.
Events that happened once
She ran out and she phoned my brother.

They travelled to Italy every summer and always stayed in small

Events that happened more
villages on the coast.
than once
As children, we played all kinds of games on the street.

She looked a bit upset.

States
Did you feel afraid?

 When we use the past simple to refer to habitual events, the meaning is similar to used to:
I did a lot of travelling when I was younger. (or I used to do a lot of travelling when I was younger.)
 Past simple and the order of events
When one past event happens after another, the first one mentioned in the past simple happened first and the
second one happened next, and so on. If we change the order of the verbs, this changes the meaning.
Compare

[event 1]I turned off the

light and [event 2]got into bed.
The first event in the past simple happened first. The second
event in the past simple happened second, and so on.
[event 1]I got into bed and [event
2]turned off the light.

III. GRAMMAR:

Gia Dinh High school – English Department – Grade 10

PAST CONTINUOUS OR PAST SIMPLE?

Choice of emphasis
Often there is little difference between the past continuous and the past simple, except that the past continuous
suggests that the event(s) were in progress at a time in the past or that they were happening as background or
temporary events. Whether we choose to use the past continuous or past simple often depends on how we see
the past event(s).
Compare

Past continuous: writer chooses to show

Doctors were treating patients in temporary beds and
the events as ongoing at that time in the
they were trying to do their best in a difficult situation.
past.

Doctors treated patients in temporary beds and Past simple: writer chooses to show the
they tried to do their best in a difficult situation. events as finished.

Events in progress in the past

We use the past continuous to talk about events and temporary states that were in progress around a certain
time in the past. We use the past simple to talk about events, states or habits at definite times in the past.
Compare

The past continuous emphasises the action or event in progress

At 4 pm last Tuesday, I was around a time in the past. The event (working) was in progress at 4
working in the office. pm.
The event was not completed at that time.

The past simple emphasises the event that happened at a definite

At 4 pm last Monday, time in the past.
I finished work early The focus is not on events in progress but rather on the whole events
and went home. (finished work, went home).
The events were completed at that time.

Emphasising main events with the past simple

When one event is more important than the other in the past, we can use the past simple to emphasise the main
event. We can use the past continuous for the background event (the less important one):
[background event]I was listening to the radio when [main event]Helen phoned.
[background event]I was sitting in the park and suddenly [main event]I saw an old school friend I hadn’t
seen for 30 years.

Rules of the Rope
Mountaineering is a dangerous sport, but skilled mountaineers have developed techniques which minimize
some of the hazards. One of these techniques of safety is the proper use of the rope.

45
Gia Dinh High school – English Department – Grade 10

Each climber’s position on the rope must be carefully determined by ability and strength. If there are three
climbers on the rope, the strongest climber should take the lead on the ascent, with the weakest climber last.
Coming down, it is safer for the strongest climber to bring up the rear, while the weakest climber is in the
middle. If a horizonal stretch is difficult, the weakest climber should again be placed in the middle.
On difficult stretches, only one person may move at a time. The delay is a protective measure. In making a
difficult ascent, the leader moves first. The second person pays out the rope until the leader has established a
safe position.
Only when the leader has secured the rope firmly to a rock or ice axe is it safe for the second climber to
move. As the second ascends, the leader maintains a nearly taut rope, so that a sudden strain from a fall will
not make it snap or crush the chest of the falling climber. When the middle one has reached a point near the
leader and has in turn secured the rope, the last climber starts up.

I. READING 1: Read the passage and the statements below. Answer whether the statements are TRUE or
FALSE. (Please write the whole word TRUE or FALSE)
In the UK, jokes and tricks can be played up until noon on 1 April. After midday it's considered bad
luck to play a trick. Anyone who forgets this and tries a joke in the afternoon becomes an 'April
Fool' themselves.
So, what kind of jokes do people play? Well, a simple example would be telling your friend that their
shoelaces are undone. Then, when they bend down to do them up, you shout, 'April Fool!', and they realize
their shoelaces are fine. Maybe it's not your kind of humour, but watch out, there's always someone who will
find it hilarious! In Ireland, a popular prank is to send someone on a 'fool's errand'. The victim is sent to
deliver a letter, supposedly asking for help. When the person receives the letter, they open it, read it and tell
the poor messenger that they will have to take the letter to another person. This continues and the victim ends
up taking the message to several different people until someone feels sorry for them and shows them what the
letter says: 'Send the fool to someone else.'
In France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and French-speaking areas of Canada and Switzerland, the
1 April tradition is known as the 'April Fish'. A common joke is to try to stick a paper fish onto a victim's back
without being noticed.
1. In the UK, you can play an April Fool's Day trick all day on 1 April.
2. One of the tricks you may play on April Fool’s Day is telling someone that his/her shoelaces are undone.

4. In French-speaking areas of Canada, the 1 April tradition is called the 'April Fish'.

of someone.

things quickly, they are god-gifted, some students take average time to learn things and some students are
slow learners, they take too much time to understand things. Sometimes it’s better to score less, don’t put
pressure on your children to score more, it can affect their health and mental state.

49
Gia Dinh High school – English Department – Grade 10

B. Nowadays, the rivalry that students face is extremely high. As we can see, to take admission to a
good school, we have to go through the test. To prove themselves, students have to compete with many other
and defeat them to get in a school. Competition is good when it is healthy, otherwise, it is stressful. Therefore,
teachers should teach their students about personality development.
C. In school, most of the students do something like what their friends do because they want to be
trendy. They get addicted to drugs, alcohol and so many things under peer influence. They want to feel
accepted and valued by their friends. This will affect their well-being. So students have to learn to say no to
those friends with whom you don’t feel good.
D. Many students hold up to shame because of their looks, background. We need to teach our students
that we all are equal. You can’t judge or make laugh of anyone on the basis of looks or their background.
Change their thinking at the initial stage so that they grew up with positive thinking and without any
discrimination mind.

B. READING:
I. Read the passage and choose the best option A, B, C or D to complete the sentences that follow:
For years video games have been criticized for making people more antisocial, overweight or
depressed. But now researchers are finding that games can actually change us for the better and improve our
body and mind.
Games can help to develop physical skills. Pre-school children who played interactive games such as
ones available on Wii have been shown to have improved motor skills, for example they can kick, catch and
throw a ball better than children who don’t play video games. A study of surgeons who do microsurgery in
Boston found that those who played video games were 27 percent faster and made 37 percent fewer errors

57
Gia Dinh High school – English Department – Grade 10

than those who didn’t. Vision is also improved, particularly telling the difference shades of grey. This is
useful for driving at night, piloting a plane or reading X-rays.
The effects are not always so positive, however. Indian University researchers carried out brain scans
on young men and found evidence that video games can alter brain functions after as little as a week of play,
affecting regions in the brain associated with emotional control and causing more aggressive behaviour in the
player. But Daphne Bavelier, one of the most experienced researchers in the field, says that the violent action
games that often worry parents most may actually have the strongest beneficial effects on the brain. In the
future, we may see many treatments for physical and neurological problems which incorporate the playing of
video games.

III. Read the passage and decide if the following statements are TRUE or FALSE:
A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still images on a strip of plastic which,
when run through a projector and shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images. A film is created
by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature
models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI (Computer-generated imagery) and computer
animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The process of
filmmaking is both an art and an industry.
Films usually include an optical soundtrack, which is a graphic recording of the spoken words, music
and other sounds that are to accompany the images. It runs along a portion of the film exclusively reserved for
it and is not projected.
The individual images that make up a film are called frames. During projection, a rotating shutter
causes intervals of darkness as each frame in turn is moved into position to be projected, but the viewer does
not notice the interruptions because of an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a
visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. The perception of motion is due to a
psychological effect called beta movement.
The name “film” originates from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) has
historically been the medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an
individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, moving picture, photo play and flick. The most
common term in the United States is movie, while in Europe film is preferred. Terms for the field in general
include the big screen, the silver screen, the movies and cinema; the latter is commonly used in scholarly texts

59

and critical essays, especially by European writers. In early years, the word sheet was sometimes used instead
of screen.

B. READING:
Exercise 1: Read the passage and choose the best option A, B, C or D to complete the sentences
that follow:
PLANET EARTH
The planet Earth is 4,600 million years old. It is difficult for US to think about such an enormous
length of time because it has little meaning for US. We can, however, simplify the idea to make it more
understandable. We can compare the planet Earth to a person of forty-six years of age.
Nothing is known about the first seven years of this person’s life. Very little information exists about
the middle period either. It was only at the age of forty- two that the Earth began to flower.

76
Gia Dinh High school – English Department – Grade 10

Dinosaurs and great reptiles did not appear until one year ago, when the planet of forty-five. Mammals only
arrived eight months ago. In the middle of last week, man-like apes became ape-like men and began to
communicate with each other. Last weekend, the Ice Age covered the Earth.
Modern man has only been around for four hours. During the last hour man discovered agriculture.
The Industrial Revolution and the rise of large cities began just sixty seconds ago.
During that short time, modern man has made a rubbish tip of the Earth. In one minute, he has
increased his numbers to terrible proportions, and has caused the death of hundreds of species of animals. He
has robbed and destroyed the planet in his search for fuels. Now he stands, like a violent, spoilt child,
delighted at the speed of his rise to power, on the edge of the final mass destruction and of killing all the life
which exists in the solar system.

COMPARISON: ADJECTIVES
COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES
1. Comparative adjectives compare one person or thing with another and enable us to say whether a person
or thing has more or less of a particular quality:

81
Gia Dinh High school – English Department – Grade 10

Josh is taller than his sister.

2. Superlative adjectives describe one person or thing as having more of a quality than all other people or
things in a group:
The most frightening film I’ve ever seen was Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’.
3. Comparative and superlative adjectives:
One-syllable adjectives (big, cold, hot, long, nice, old, tall)
To form the comparative, we use the -er suffix with adjectives of one syllable:
It’s colder today than yesterday.
To form the superlative, we use the -est suffix with adjectives of one syllable. We normally use the before a
superlative adjective:
I think that’s the biggest apple I’ve ever seen!
4. One-syllable adjectives which are irregular
Some one-syllable adjectives have irregular comparative and superlative forms:
1. bad, worse, worst
2. far, farther/further, farthest/furthest
3. good, better, best
4. old, older/elder, oldest/eldest
The morning flight is better than the afternoon one.
5. Two-syllable adjectives
Two-syllable adjectives ending in -y: change y to i and take the -er and -est endings:

busy, busier,
happy, happier, happiest
busiest

easy, easier, easiest funny, funnier, funniest

We were busier last week than this week.

That was the easiest exam I’ve ever taken.
Some other two-syllable adjectives (especially those ending in an unstressed vowel sound) can also take the
-er and -est endings:

clever, cleverer, cleverest quiet, quieter, quietest

narrow, narrower,
simple, simpler, simplest
narrowest

I’ve always thought that Donald was cleverer than his brother.
We don’t normally use the -er and -est endings with two-syllable adjectives ending in -ful. Instead, we use
more and most/least:
This dictionary is more useful than the one we had before.

82
Gia Dinh High school – English Department – Grade 10

6. Longer adjectives
Adjectives of three or more syllables form the comparative with more/less and the superlative with
most/least:
The second lecture was more interesting than the first.
7. Comparative adjectives: using much, a lot, far, etc.
We can strengthen or emphasize a comparative adjective using words such as much, a lot, far, even or
rather, or by using than ever after the adjective:
This food is much better than the food we had yesterday.
We can soften a comparative adjective using a little or a bit. A bit is less formal:
She feels a little more confident now that she’s given her first public performance.
8. Comparative adjectives: -er and -er, more and more
To talk about how a person or thing is changing and gaining more of a particular quality, we can use two
-er form adjectives connected by and, or we can use more and more before an adjective. We don’t follow
such comparisons with than:
The weather is getting hotter and hotter.
I’m getting more and more interested in conservation these days.
Comparative adjectives: the -er, the -er and the more …, the more …
If a person or things gains more of a particular quality and this causes a parallel increase of another quality,
we can repeat the + a comparative adjective:
The colder it is, the hungrier I get. (as the weather gets colder, I get hungrier)
The more generous you are towards others, the more generous they are likely to be towards you.
9. Reduced forms after comparatives
After than, we often don’t repeat subject pronouns with impersonal subjects, or auxiliary verbs with passive
voice verbs:
The exam results were better than predicted. (preferred to … better than people predicted.)
Temperatures that summer were higher than previously recorded.
(preferred to … than were previously recorded.)

Not as is more common than not so:

B. WRITING:
I. READING: Read the following excerpt from a passage and decide if the following statements are true
or false.
THE END OF TV?
I keep reading articles that argue the TV is dead. According to this view, people are spending far more
time using the Internet for their entertainment and for information. As a result, they argue the TV is becoming
less and less important in our lives. The time we spend watching videos online is certainly increasing but I
don't think this is a reason to believe we should be saying goodbye to the television.
The TV is still a very popular way a lot of us get our entertainment at home. It offers us the chance to
see top musical artists, great films, documentaries and sometimes, thanks to important live events, it has the
power to bring the whole country and all ages together in a way the Internet never could. How often do
thousands or even millions of friends or families sit down at the same time to watch something together
online?
Some people argue that the TV offers a poor quality of programs on the many channels we now have.
It is certainly true that many of the channels do nothing more than repeat old shows or offer cheap, low
quality programs. However, I would argue that a lot of content on the Internet isn't particularly great. At least
TV shows have professional people checking the quality of shows, which a lot of content on the web doesn't.
I agree that it is easy to keep up-to-date with the latest news on the Internet, even though much of it is
not true or certainly can't be trusted. I enjoy sitting down to the news on TV in the evening, knowing that I am
more likely to believe the information than the things I read online. Anybody can post information on the
Internet and a lot of it is opinion rather than fact.
So I don't think we should be so quick to say goodbye to the TV. In fact, I think it has many more
years left in it! I certainly won't be swapping my TV for the latest laptop and will continue to enjoy relaxing in
front of it in the evenings.
