1. General background
As general background Information, the precursors to the formation of nitrogen oxides during
the combustion process are nitrogen and oxygen. Together these compounds comprise 99%
of the engine intake air. Oxygen will be consumed during the combustion process, with the
amount of excess oxygen available being a function of the air/fuel ratio which the engine is
operating under.
The nitrogen remains largely unreacted in the combustion process, however a small
percentage will be oxidized to form various oxides of nitrogen. The nitrogen oxides (NOx)
which can be formed included NO and NO2, while the amounts are primarily a function of
flame or combustion temperature and, if present, the amount of organic nitrogen available
from the fuel. It is also a function of the time the nitrogen and excess oxygen are exposed to
the high temperatures associated with the diesel engine's combustion process.
In other words, the higher the combustion temperature (e.g., high peak pressure, high
compression ratio, high rate of fuel delivery, etc.) the greater the amount of NOx formation.
The term NOx (nitrogen oxides) is general term that Covers both NO, N2O and NO2 in the
context of exhaust emissions. NOx has been identified as particularly harmful, as it causes
"acid rain", is toxic, and can contribute to atmospheric smog under certain conditions. The
oxides of nitrogen are believed to cause emphysema and contribute substantially to acid rain
and smog formation.
NOx also increases the local ozone concentration, which has a detrimental effect on
Vegetation. Smalr quantities oMaughing gas (N2O) can also be present among other oxides of
nitrogen N2O destroys ozone in the stratosphere where it is needed for UV light filtration.
NOx has an adverse effect on the environment causing acidification, formation of ozone,
nutrient enrichment and contributes to adverse health effects globally.

Brief description
After installation of a pre-certificated on board a ship, every marine diesel engine shall have on-board
verification surveys conducted as specified to verify that the engine continue to comply with the NOx
emission limits contained in regulation 13 Annex VI. Such verification of compliance shall be
determined by use of the following method:
Engine parameter check method in accordance with IMO verify that an engine's component settings
and operating values have not deviated from the specification in the engine's Technical File.
Safety requirements / precautions before any verification can be carried out on the engine:
Stopped engine
Shut-off starting air

The individual fuel pump cams or camshaft are not adjustable, but the position of the complete
camshaft can be altered as the driving gearwheel fitted to the camshaft is provided with oblong screw
holes, enabling it to be turned relative to the hub.
The gearwheel is provided with an engraved scale and the camshaft hub with a mark,
see "Measuring the camshaft position".
After loosening of the screws which secure the gear rim, the latter can be turned (by turning the
engine) relative to the camshaft, and the altered Pmax or the cylinder bank can be calculated by
reading the angle at which the gear rim has been displaced in relation to the camshaft.
Additionally to the on-board verification of the fuel oil camshaft, the Shop Trial Record of Diesel
Engine specify the initial setting of the camshaft.
By turning the camshaft gearwheel ± 1 mark the maximum pressure is altered about ± 3 bar.

Brief description
Examine the injection time within the scope of the IMO certification.
The work determining the verification of the plunger lift at the point of static commencement of fuel oil
delivery and verification of the flywheel angle/mark at the beginning point of static commencement of
fuel oil delivery.
Tools required
Flash light
1 small hand mirror
10 mm Hexagon socket screws
Compressed air
When the plunger is in its bottom position, the pump barrel is filled with oil through the two inlet holes.
During the pressure stroke, part of the oil will be pressed back through the inlet holes until these are
covered by the plunger, see "Measuring the injection timing", then the theoretical static
commencement of fuel oil delivery beginning after 4mm prelift of the plunger, for further information
see the instruction manual.
The measuring of the plunger lift can be verified with follow procedure (by 2 persons)
Before starting blow with compressed air through the inlet port on the pump to clean from oil.
With a flash light on one side and the mirror on the other side of the fuel injection pump the static closing point of
the fuel inlet port and thereby commencement of fuel oil delivery can be verified.
When the light disappear - twist the mirror a little bit to be sure that the plunger has closed the inlet
port. For further information, see "Measuring the injection timing".
This verification procedure include likewise a correct verification of the "Nominal size",
see "Appendix 3.Fuel adjustment data sheet" in the Shop trial record of diesel engine.
