Tips for Effective Story
Writing
• Make a revision checklist. (check these items after you have
completed your essay before you submit)
• Check your tenses- ensure they are appropriate
• Check your spelling
• Check your Proper Nouns (names of people and places)
ensure that they are in CAPITAL LETTERS.
• Check your punctuation marks and ensure that they are
present and included in the appropriate areas.
Tenses- Exercise
• Convert the following lines to past tense.

• 1. She is drinking a latte at the cafeteria down the street.


• She was drinking a latte at the cafeteria down the street.
• 2. The boy is running quickly down the road because someone
is chasing him. The boy was running quickly down the road because someone was
chasing him.
• 3. They are drying their clothes outside because electricity is
gone in their area of residence and they have no choice. They
were drying their clothes outside because electricity had went in their area of
residence and they had no choice.
• 4. The computer is giving a lot of problems, I think the virus
scanner is outdated.
• 5. Writing is my favorite pastime these days because it gives
me peace of mind when I am stressed.
Topic
The door was closed and the cobwebs in front of it suggested
that it had not been opened for a long time. Moor turned the
key and pushed open the door.
