Deadly drones
There is something very satisfying about making an object fly, whether it is a paper plane or a children’s kite.
There is a certain charm found in these innocent pastimes. However, in recent years, a much more troublesome
flying object has made headlines around the world: drones. These are not purely toys, but are now being used in
concerning and even dangerous ways by a variety of groups that encompass many people from governments to
criminals.

There are more than 1,500 different types of drone that you can buy, and the laws surrounding them are
struggling to keep pace. Some drones are smaller than a soccer ball, others are almost as big as a small plane.
Some are very popular as children’s toys. More expensive ones have cameras on them. That means the people
can – and do – fly them over people’s houses. This is terrible for privacy – imagine relaxing in your yard and then
finding that you are being spied on by a drone. The law is still unclear about what to do in these situations. In the
USA, someone even shot down a drone because it was flying over their land. The person who shot down the
drone was acquitted because there was no law against it.

In most places, anyone can buy a drone: you don’t need a license, like you do for cars or firearms. But how safe
are they? In the city of Seattle in the USA in 2016, a drone hit a building and then fell onto a woman, badly
injuring her. And not only this, but drones can be very dangerous when they get too close planes. Every year,
pilots report incidents of drones flying too close to them, putting hundreds of lives at risk. In 2019, one of Britain’s
largest airports, Gatwick, had to divert multiple flights after people reported seeing drones flying near the airport.
It is now illegal to fly a drone within 5km of the airport and all drones should fly below 120 meters in height. Still,
it can be very hard to convict people who break these rules.

Drones are also used by criminals. They can use drones to look at buildings to find the vulnerable places to break
into them. They can also use drones to look out for approaching police during a criminal activity, or even to set off
alarms in neighboring buildings so police officers are distracted by the noise. In England, it was reported that
friends of criminals in jail were using drones to deliver weapons, cell phones, and other goods to their prisons. To
combat drone crime, many police forces are now training specialists to track drones used for criminal activity, but
at the moment, it is very hard to know who is flying the drones. Any technology that records who the pilot is can
easily be changed or deleted, so people who use drones to commit a crime often get away with it.

Some countries are now also using drones as weapons. The pilots can use the drone camera to locate the enemy
before they shoot. That is a frightening thought. If we can be threatened like this, we have to wonder why we
allow such technology.
Unit test

In the future, we’ll have a lot more drones, too. In the USA, you can even study for a degree in flying a drone. As
drones get more sophisticated, we will be forced to accept that they will be used for more and more things. Some
companies are already delivering parcels using drones, a number of which can carry up to 15 kilos. But imagine a
city with hundreds of drones carrying these weights over your head.

Some people argue that drones do many good things. For example, they can be used to look for people who
might be lost on a mountain, or to take medicine to a remote location. However, for me, these advantages are
small compared to the disadvantages.

Every year, new laws are passed to try to stop drones from being used for dangerous or criminal activities, but it
seems that these laws are challenging to enforce. If I were in control of drone technology, I would have made it
impossible for drone users to hide their identity years ago. Until this happens, drones for me are not toys, but
potentially lethal weapons and we should not turn a blind eye to their dangers.
