Third Quarter – Module 6
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let’s Try before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
Let’s Learn
Sometimes, you get into these unavoidable situations where you need to
share your opinions and ideas which may affirm or negate other people’s insights
or thoughts. You may worry that your words may offend somebody or make them
feel hurt. Even though it is easier to be just quiet and agree with all the things they
say, you may feel frustrated especially if you really want your side to be heard. The
best thing to do is to learn those different expressions to agree and disagree.
Let’s Try
Write the word of the correct answer on the space provided. You can also take the
quiz online. Just visit the link: https://www.englishclub.com/speaking/agreeing-
disagreeing-quiz.php

the same
_________________3. Which expression shows you strongly agree with what someone
has just said?
That's for sure.
I'm not so sure.
Well, I suppose so.
_________________6. If you say, "I couldn't agree with you more", it means you
totally agree
no longer agree
totally disagree
_________________9. What can you say if someone interrupts you before you have
finished making your point?
You didn't let me finish.
You didn't finish me.
Sorry, go ahead.

In this module, you will learn how to express agreement and disagreement
so you can effectively communicate your ideas in an assertion or argument while
recognizing that others may hold different opinion from you, and you can still stay
friends even if you have different ideas.
Let’s Recall
Knowing that we are all different, we understand that people can have
different views and ideas. In this video (visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=i2kbZXoT34Q), let us see how this set of friends react to each other’s opinions about
a game they have watched. Their conversation can also be read below.

Let’s Explore
Agreement:
It is worthwhile saying that silence is not understood as agreement. If you
agree with an opinion or an idea, you are expected to say so.
Disagreement:
Expressing disagreement is always respected as honest, and sometimes as
courageous.
Expressions used to disagree
I don't agree with you.
I’m sorry, but I disagree.
I'm afraid, I can't agree with you.
The problem is that...
I (very much) doubt whether...
This is in complete contradiction to...
With all due respect…
I am of a different opinion because ...
I cannot share this / that / the view.
I cannot agree with this idea.
What I object to is...
I have my own thoughts about that.
Partial agreement:
You can also agree but with reservation especially when there is a doubt or
feeling of not being able to accept something completely.
Expressions to partially disagree
It is only partly true that...
That’s true, but…
I can agree with that only with reservations.
That seems obvious, but...
That is not necessarily so.
It is not as simple as it seems.
I agree with you in principle, but…
I agree with you in part, but…
Well, you could be right.
It is always a good idea to justify your opinions. Do not just say ‘I agree’ but
say ‘I agree because I think that ... (explain your reason).’
3. Use “I” statements to communicate: How you feel, what you think and
what you want or need.
Using “you” statement can be argumentative so instead of saying,
“You always remind me about my chores on Wednesdays when you know I
have a lot of homework” say, “I’m feeling pressured because I have a lot of
homework tonight. Can I do those chores tomorrow?”
5. Stay calm.
Of course, it is a big challenge to stay calm, especially on a heated
conversation. Respect goes beyond difficult conversation. Being helpful and
considerate can establish the foundation when we might disagree.

Let’s Dig In
Listen to the responses of the characters in the conversation found on this link:
https://www.eslfast.com/robot/topics/employment/employment21.htm. On a
separate sheet of paper, write A if the statement indicates AGREEMENT or D if
DISAGREEMENT. The conversation can also be seen below.

_______1. B: I agree, I think that that would be perfect!
A: I was thinking it could take place sometime in January.
_______2. B: That might be a little too cold for some people.
_______3. A: Yes, you are right.
B: What about April? April has good weather that is not too cold or hot.
_______4. A: Yes, that would work out better.
B: You know, maybe we could take a survey to see how that works for
everyone.
_______5. A: Good idea! We will have to get right on it.
_______6. B: Fine! Well, I will get right on it now!
Let’s Remember
Let’s Apply
Choose one topic that you are interested in. Present your arguments whether you
