Anemia

Low hemoglobin

N for male – 14-16 g/dL

Female – 12-14 g/dL

N RBC – 80-100

MCV – Mean Corpuscular Volume

1. Microcytic - <80 -> Iron-deficiency anemia

S/sx:

1. Glossitis

2. Pica – eats non-edible foods

3. Cheilosis – windburn-like

4. Koilonychia – depressed/ spoon-shaped nails

Management:

Fe supplements:
- Oral (better to take when acidic) – taken on empty stomach; if abdn is painful, take
with small meals = SE: constipation

- Parenteral (IM) – use z-track technique

2. Normocytic – 80-100 -> check reticulocytes

When high: Hemolytic anemia -> sickle cell anemia

S/sx of hemolytic anemia:

High bilirubin = Jaundice

When low: Aplastic anemia -> Myelosuppression

LOW RBC – Anemia

LOW WBC – infection

LOW PLATELET – bleeding

= PANCYTOPENIA

3. Macrocytic - > 100 -> megatoblastic anemia

Green/ leafy – B9

Meat/ organ meats – B12


B12 – Pernicious anemia (-) intrinsic factor

Treatment:

IM injection of B12 given monthly

Sickle-cell Disease

- Autosomal Recessive (both parents should be affected) Disorder

- Hemoglobin – S

- XsX – carrier

- XYs – carrier
