‘Women and STEM
{1) Science, technology, engineering nd maths, otherwise known as STEM, are
arguably the four academic dscipines which will have the greatest pact on our
future. Yet the proportion of women working in these feds is incredibly low: in
‘the UK in 2017, vemen made up only 23% ofthe workforce in core STEM
industries, Over the las few years, organizations such as WISE (Women in
Scicace, Technology, Enginering and Mathematics) have been working
encourage more gris to study technical subjects, However, while the number of
‘women choosing carers in science and technology has been increasing, itis stil
very low.
{2} Those who want to increase the proportion of female STEM wosters argue that
‘women are discouraged from entering these fields, Female scientstsare fewer in
‘number, and ess well known than their male counterparts, even wise their
accomplishments are of a similar level, This means tha gies often dont get to
‘heer about the people who could be thee role models, and who could inspire them.
Ti addition, when women achieve careers in STEM, they often face «more hostile
‘work environment than their male counterparts. Ina 2018 study, 78% of
respondents reported experiencing gender dserimingtion, while 48% said their
‘gender had made it harder fr them to succeed
[3] Another argument for greater inclusion sth the lack of women working in
‘STEM moans the provailing attitudes and views in science and technology ate
‘male, Male scientists and engineers natueally tend to look at problems from a male
perspective, and this can have an impact on research
[4] An additional concer is tht the skills ofa significant part of the population
ce not being utilized. As a result, women with a natural talent for these subjects
«are being lotto the world of STEM. We might have made more discoveries and
‘even more progress in technology ifthe very best candidates from beth genders
‘wore working together
{5} The efforts to enoourage greater female participation in these felis seem to
have a big effect, though WISE's figures showed thats lovily 23%of those in30
‘STEM occupations in the UK were female in 2017, in 2015 the figure was just
15%, 90 the proportion is moving in a positive direction. It would appear that ina
‘male-dominated world there are still many girls who would choose to become
scientists or engineers if they just he the seme encouragement asthe boys.
