Doctrina Christiana-Written Report (Group 2)
Doctrina Christiana-Written Report (Group 2)
The Doctrina Christiana was an early book on the Roman Catholic Catechism,
written in 1593 by Fray Juan de Plasencia, and is believed to be one of the earliest
printed books in the Philippines. The title literally means “Christian Doctrine”, and thus
the primary goal of the book was to propagate Christian teaching across the Philippine
archipelago. The book consists of 38 leaves and 74 pages of text in Spanish and Tagalog.
It was printed in Manila in 1593 and intended as an aid for priests and friars
trying to convert the people of the newly colonized Philippines. It contains the Lord’s
Prayer, Hail Mary, Creed and basic articles of the Catholic faith, including ten
commandments, sacraments of the holy church, commandments of the holy church, our
father and the seven mortal sins. It is all presented in three ways: in Spanish, in Tagalog
written in Roman letters, and in the indigenous Baybayin script.
HAIL MARY
Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou amongst women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death,
Amen.
