Reflection In To Kill A Mockingbird
I finished the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book is about the
childhood experiences of a girl named Scout. The story takes place in the small town of
Maycomb, Alabama and struggling with racism. Scout must learn about the racism and
prejudices in the South. The book highlights the injustice of being black in the southern
court system. In this journal, I will be evaluating.
In to Kill a Mockingbird the theme walk in another s shoes is definite. Lee is able to
bring out this by using interactions between multiple characters. Scout grows as a young
lady as her relationships with the Cunninghams develop. One interaction would be when
the Cunninghams paid the Finches with goods instead of money. Scout believed it was a
bit unconventional and asked Atticus why they did it that way. Atticus knowing the
value of this teaching moment was able to explain that they could not do any better.
This way of paying was the only way that was available for them. Some men may have
not wanted to do business with a person like him, but Atticus stepped in his shoes. This
helped him understand the situation more clearly. Another time this theme made its
presence was when Walter Cunningham went over to Scout s house for lunch. When he
ate lunch at their house Scout shamed him by the way he ate. Calpurnia being a person
who valued learning like Atticus took this moment to teach Scout. She explained that
Scout needs to step in his shoes and realize that he grew up differently. No matter who
they are they should still be treated with the utmost respect. The last interaction with the
Cunninghams that brings up this theme occurred when a small mob formed in front of
the jail. This mob was made up of Mr. Cunningham and other farmers. They went to the
jail with the intention of giving Atticus a piece of their minds. Before they could cause
any commotion Scout, Jem and Dill had arrived. Scout feeling the tension did her best
to break it. Through her efforts she was able to get Mr. Cunningham to step in Atticus
shoes and realize what it s like to be a father in this moment. This helped bring him back
to his senses and led him to call it off. Besides the
Cunninghams, Boo Radley also brings up the theme. Scout and Jem held a
Antigone And Civil Disobedience
Civil disobedience is a topic that starts many arguments, is a widely debated matter by
many, and can be used in a multitude of different ways. The act of civil disobedience
can be noted in major works such as Sophocles Antigone and Dr King s Letter from
Birmingham Jail. Sophocles Antigone shows the inner struggle of a young woman who
is dealing with a difficult situation between moral and spiritual obligation and a kingly
decree. Martin Luther King Jr. is writing in response to a letter from some clergymen
saying that the African American should stop their protests and explains the reason he
and many others continue to incite civil disobedience. King encouraged others to use
civil disobedience as a manner of making it known to the public... Show more content on

Antigone s struggle was for the rights of a single person, her brother, and Martin
Luther King Jr. s fight was for not only for himself but also for the welfare of those
mistreated by the unfairness in the country. Both are due to the value systems on which
laws are created are, for the most part, morally and ethically based. What one society
might consider a bad law might not be otherwise thought of as unjust. Sophocles
Antigone exemplified the moral and ethical conflicts that can rise from an unjust law,
using the character Antigone as a central point. Although she engaged in civil
disobedience, for burying her brother, Polyneices, even though it was not tolerated, her
efforts were applauded by the audience and in her own heart. Antigone defined unjust as
something that went against the laws of the gods. She finds the bond between relatives
so strong that she feels she owes it to her brother to give him a burial, even if the law
forbids it. Martin Luther King Jr., in his Letter from Birmingham Jail, describes an unjust
law as a code that is out of harmony with the moral law... not rooted in eternal and
natural law. (paragraph 16). He addresses the biased practices of segregation in his
Letter from Birmingham Jail, and the unsuccessful attempts at regulating it. He wants to
eradicate the problem of racial prejudice to achieve brotherhood. King also brings up a
similar point as Antigone, saying that he must constantly respond to the... call for aid,
(paragraph 3) and that Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. (paragraph
4). In the cases of the writings and the people involved, King s reason helps make a more
compelling argument for civil
