My friend Todd Herman is a sports psychology coach. Topflight. He helps
people win Olympic medals. Todd has one of the most encouraging theories on
resistance and new habits that I’ve come across.

“Your body is just going through a change, and you’re interpreting it as


either positive or negative. Really, what you should do is get excited about
[resistance]. The change that needs to happen in order for your new habits to
take form is taking hold. It’s taking hold inside your body, ” says Todd.

“The most difficult part of the journey is the first sixteen days, but then after
that, it’s a piece of cake. We don’t need to think about it anymore. It goes from
our conscious mind to our unconscious, or habit mind, where it’s happening
automatically for us.”

So, instead of shutting down the new habits when they start to feel unpleasant,
we need to shift our attitude toward loving the resistance that arises. Because
if we can push through the awkward growth spurt—giving our cells adequate
time to catch up with our good intentions—we gain prodigious momentum.

Stay steady with your wanting. On really hungry days you may have to whisper
to yourself over and over again, I just want to feel what I want to feel… I just
want to feel what I want to feel… reminding yourself that you always have
the right to desire something more than what’s currently in front of you.
Eventually, how you create your most wanted feelings will become a habit of
your true nature—instinctively healthy and self-aware.

You are the architect of your own fulfillment—and you have so much to give…
and receive.

1. Fierce, but flexible is the mantra.

Be really really focused on your vision—the capacity


to lock on to a dream and tune out distractions is
the difference between an idea and an empire. AND,
be bendy about how you’re going to pull off your
ambitions. Life might show you a circuitous-but-magical
backroad to your goal if you’re awake enough to see
the turnpike—and daring enough to take it.

2. Pay attention to your
Core Desired Feelings.
Really, that kind of clarity could overhaul your ambition,
and it will most definitely create shifts in how you go
about getting stuff done. In my line of work, there are
a ton of tried n’ true things one could do to sell more,
wrangle more, be more popular and all that, but if those
tactics don’t make me feel incredible doing them, then
I’m going to pass.

4. Nap when needed.

Seriously. Here’s a mind trick for all of


us productivity hounds. Tell yourself this:
“If I take a break, I will actually be more
productive.” This is true. It’s scientifically
proven. But you are also “allowed” to
take a break because your body and
mind really need it. No proof or reasoning
required.

Repeat after me:


Rest is
productive.
No prompt this time. Just let that thought
settle and do its thing...

5. Let the love take you over.
Enthusiasm saves lives, I say. Be stoked about being stoked!
