What had Happened?


*Dozens of fire erupted in new south wales, Australia,
prompting the government to declare a state of
emergency in November 2019.
*An area about the size of South Korea, roughly 25.5
million acres, has burned.
What is the loss?
*At least 33 people are dead, including at least three
volunteer fire fighters, and more are missing.
*Around 3000 homes have been destroyed in the days
leading up to New Year’s Eve, thousands of people who
were forced to evacuate sought shelter on beaches across
New South Wales and Victoria.
*More than 1 billion mammals, birds and reptiles likely
lost their lives in the blazes, according to one estimate
from the University of Sydney.
*Eight thousand koalas, a third of all the koalas in New
South Wales, are believed to have perished, and about 30
percent of the koala’s habitat has also wiped out.
