The Fortunes of Failure
For 2-4 Players
• 24 Success Cards (1 point each)
• 32 Failure Cards (2 points each)
• 16 Challenge Cards
• Blank Cards to Create Your Own Successes, Failures, and Scenarios

OBJECTIVE
Accumulate the most points by learning from failures to achieve success.

BASIC RULES
Players take turns placing cards in the center. Failure cards stay in the middle and accumulate.
Success cards clear the middle. Whoever plays a success card takes it, along with all the failures
from the middle, and adds those points to their score.

SETUP & Gameplay

1. Separate out the Challenge cards into a stack off to the side, then shuffle the Success and
Failure cards into a single deck. Each player is dealt three cards, and then the deck is placed in
the center for players to draw from each turn. The first player to the left of the dealer picks a
Challenge card and places it in the middle to start the round.
2. The first player chooses either a Success or a Failure card out of their hand and places it face up
in the middle. After every card played, the player must read the Success or Failure prompt and
explain why it lead to the success or failure of the Challenge. Then draw a replacement card.
a. If the card played is a Failure, the card stays in the middle and the turn moves to the next
player to the left.
b. If the card played is a Success, that player takes that card, and any previously played
Failures, and places those cards face up in front of themselves. A new Challenge card is
chosen and the turn moves to the next player to the left.
3. Play continues until the draw deck is empty and all the cards have been played. Any Failures
remaining in the middle stay in the middle. Each player counts their Successes and Failures and
gets their total score. The player with the highest score wins!

TIPS
Think of Success cards as habits which lead to success. Successes are stronger when they’re built
on failures! Playing a Success card without enough Failures in the middle will always result in a
lower score. If you don’t think your opponents have a Success card in their hands, consider saving
yours until more Failures have built up.
Have your own ideas for Successes, Failures, and Challenges? Write your own and replace them
with cards in the deck.
Want more or fewer Failure or Success cards? Just add or subtract cards from the deck. Customize
the game so it’s just right for you.
