ITEM: 8.4” TFT Video Monitor

MANUFACTURER: RDDS Avionics Ltd
PART NUMBER: LCD0803-700/740/741

The LCD0803 is a compact, hi-resolution video monitor designed specifically for installation in
aircraft and other mobile applications including naval vessels, and command and control
vehicles. The unit is fully hardened and has been designed in accordance with DO160D.

The LCD0803 uses an SVGA (800 x 600) hi resolution TFT LCD display and features RDDS
proprietary video processing electronics. Video images are displayed free from motion or
de-interlacing artefacts. The product has been designed to offer the highest possible quality of
displayed image.

When used with a FLIR or CCD sensor system the LCD0803 is capable of achieving the required
fidelity to accurately display the received image. The unit is fitted with illuminated front panel
controls and is available with full NVG compatibility as an option.

All of the unit’s electronics are designed and manufactured by RDDS with an emphasis on
reliability and stability. The product is fully supported throughout its life by RDDS and will
demonstrate an MTBF of > 5500 hours in service.

The LCD0803 monitor is housed in an enclosure manufactured from aluminium alloy and is
finished in a hard wearing black acrylic paint. Other colours and finishes are available as a
special order. It is sufficiently hardened to allow installation into a hostile environment such as a
helicopter or marine vessel.

The monitor can receive composite video in either PAL or NTSC format and RGB video in VGA
format.

The back of the unit contains two vertically mounted D-Connectors. The unit is easily fixed to an
instrument panel or other flat surface via four holes for cap bolts located in each corner of the
enclosure.

The differences between the three part numbers are identified below:

 LCD0803-700 Standard, non-reflective glass

 LCD0803-740 NVG glass
 LCD0803-741 As per the LCD0803-740 but video 1 is dedicated to the
EVS camera (“EVS” displayed instead of “VID 1”) and
features the WoW blanking function

Aside from the differences mentioned above the monitors are identical.

4.3 Additional Operating Notes
The following information is offered to allow operators to have a better understanding of the video
controls.

CONTRAST: An LCD monitor takes a conventional analogue video signal and digitises the
image to allow it to be displayed on the LCD screen. It is possible to take the
contrast range of this digital video and extend it to more than would normally
be found on a conventional CRT monitor. When being used with the colour
camera of the stabilised turret this can give very crisp images at maximum
contrast.

The operator should be aware that if the system is being used at full contrast
and is then switched to thermal imaging it will be necessary to reduce the
contrast in order to optimise the grey scale and allow for a better distinction
between the various levels of the monochrome image.

BRIGHTNESS: The video brightness controls on the right hand side of the monitor control the
brightness of the picture content. It is important to realise that, as with the
contrast control, it is possible to have too much video brightness. This is
particularly important when viewing a thermal image.

PIP: The pip size and position can be adjusted in the PIP menu. When the system
is powered down, the unit will remember the last used settings upon restart.

NOTE 1: The level of the video received when using the colour camera will vary greatly
when compared to a bright sunny day or a grey rainy day. For this reason, the
controls have been made to respond quickly to allow the operator to see a
definite change when the buttons are held. It is recommended that all
operators take some time to familiarise themselves with the effects of the
contrast and brightness on various targets whilst switching between the colour
camera and the thermal imaging camera.

NOTE 2: If no MAP input is present when the MAP input is selected the screen will blank
and display a “NO SIGNAL” message at the base of the screen.

14
NOTE 1: Pins 20 & 21 on Connector P1 are discrete inputs (open/ground), various
combinations of which are used to indicate when the cockpit is in Day, Night or
NVG mode. This will limit the maximum brightness of the monitor. The table
defining the NVG status of the cockpit is shown in the table below:

Input DAY NIGHT NVG

Discrete 1
open ground open ground
(NVG_IN_1)
Discrete 2
open open ground ground
(NVG_IN_2)

The display brightness works in the following way:

-Day: Normal behaviour. Maximum brightness is as per the monitor

specification and is calculated as the maximum brightness multiplied
by the NVG glass transmission ratio. The brightness is dimmable
using the buttons on the display.

- Night: In night mode, the brightness is set to 4% of the maximum. This can
be increased up to a maximum of 30% of the original brightness.

-NVG: In NVG mode, the brightness is set to the minimum brightness. This
can be increased up to a maximum of 20% of the original brightness.
NVG mode uses the standard backlighting source and filtering is
achieved through advanced dichroic glass integrated into the TFT
panel.

These pins are only available on the LCD0803-740 and the LCD0803-741
models

Note 2: This pin is only available on the LCD0803-741 Model. When this pin is
grounded the lower third of the screen area will be masked on the EVS input
ONLY. When the pin is open circuit the entire screen is visible.

Important note: The minimum brightness of the display is 1-2 cdm-2. The display will never be
completely black.

LCD0803-741: The LCD0803-741 is identical to the LCD0803-740 apart from two distinct
differences:

1) Composite video input 1 is dedicated to the EVS camera. “EVS” will be

displayed on the on screen display when this is selected instead of “VID 1”
2) The -741 features a WoW input. When this is grounded the lower third of
the screen will be blanked on the EVS input only.
