(Autonomous)
B.Tech III SEMESTER CIE - II EXAMINATIONS FEBRUARY - 2023
Regulation: UG20
SOLID MECHANICS
Time: 2 Hours (MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ) Max Marks: 20
Answer any FOUR questions
All parts of the question must be answered in one place only

1. (a) Explain with reasons which theory of failure is best suited for: i) Ductile materials
ii) Brittle material [BL: Understand| CO: 4|Marks: 2]
(b) The principal stresses at a point in an elastic material are 22 N /mm2 tensile, 110 N /mm2 tensile
and 55 N /mm2 compressive. If the elastic limit in simple tension is 220 N /mm2 and 1/m = 0.3,
then determine whether the failure of material will occur or not according to
i) Maximum principal stress theory
ii) Maximum principal strain theory [BL: Apply| CO: 4|Marks: 3]

2. (a) Show that max shear stress in a solid circular shaft is 1.33 times of average shear stress when it
is subjected to a bending moment. [BL: Understand| CO: 5|Marks: 2]
(b) A circular beam of 100 mm diameter is subjected to a shear force of 30 KN. Calculate the value
of maximum shear stress and sketch the variation of shear stress along the depth of the beam.
[BL: Apply| CO: 5|Marks: 3]

3. (a) Determine the slope and deflection of simply supported beam with uniformly varying load by
double integration method. [BL: Understand| CO: 5|Marks: 2]
(b) A simply supported beam of span 3 m is subjected to a central load of 10 kN. Find the maximum
slope and deflection of the beam. Take I = 12 ×106 mm4 and E = 200 GPa.
[BL: Apply| CO: 5|Marks: 3]

4. (a) What is Indian standard code for columns. Are you satisfied with the factor of safety of 1.68.
Give explanation to your answer. [BL: Understand| CO: 6|Marks: 2]
(b) A closely coiled helical spring is made of 6 mm wire. The maximum shear stress and deflection
under a 200 N load is not to exceed 80 MPa and 11 mm respectively. Determine the no. of coils
and their mean diameter. Take C = 84 MPa. [BL: Apply| CO: 6|Marks: 3]

5. (a) Explain the term ‘slenderness ratio’ and describe with mathematical expression, how it limits the
use of Euler’s formula for crippling load. [BL: Understand| CO: 6|Marks: 2]
(b) A hollow alloy tube 4 m long with external and internal diameters of 40 mm and 25 mm respec-
tively was found to extend 4.8 mm under a tensile load of 60 kN. Find the buckling load for the
tube with both ends pinned. Also find the safe load on the tube, taking a factor of safety as 5.
