(b) Determine whether the following are surds or not: [3]

i. 125
3
ii. 81
4
iii. 256

Ans:

i. 125

The prime factors of 125 = 5  5  5

125  5  5  5  5 5

Therefore, it is a surd as surds are those irrational numbers which are roots of positive
integers and the value of roots can’t be determined.

3
ii. 81

The prime factors of 81 = 3  3  3  3

81  3  3  3  3  9

Therefore, it is not a surd as surds are those irrational numbers which are roots of positive
integers and the value of roots can’t be determined.

iii. 256

11
12

The prime factors of 256 = 2  2  2  2  2  2  2  2

256  2  2  2  2  2  2  2  2  16

Therefore, it is not a surd as surds are those irrational numbers which are roots of positive
integers and the value of roots can’t be determined.

(c) Two circles touch externally. The sum of their areas is 41πsq. cm and the distance
between their centres is 9 cm. Find the radii of the circles. [4]

Ans:

Let the radius of first circle be r1 and of second circle be r2 .

r1  r2  9 (Distance between the centres)

r1  r2  9
r2  9  r1 ..............................(1)

Area of circle = r 2

Area of first circle = r12

Area of second circle = r2 2

Sum of their areas = r12  r22

 41  r12  r2 2

41   r12  r2 2 
41  r12  r2 2 ........................( 2)

Using identity a 2  b2  ( a  b)2  2ab

 r12  r2 2   r1  r2   2r1 r2
2

41  (9)2  2r1 r2
41  81  2r1 r2
2r1 r2  40
r1 r2  20

Substituting the value of r2 from equation (1)

12
13

r1 r2  20
r1 (9  r1 )  20
r12  9r1  20  0
r12  5r1  4r1  20  0
r1 ( r1  5)  4( r1  5)  0
( r1  5)( r1  4)  0
r1  5 or 4
 r2  4 or 5

Therefore, the radii of two circles is 5cm and 4cm.

(c) A, B, C and D are points on the sides PQ, QR, RS and SP, respectively, of a square
PQRS such that SC = RB = QA = PD. Prove that ABCD is a square. [4]

Ans:

SC = RB = QA = PD (given)

CR = BQ = AP = DS (As PQRS is a square)..................(1)

In ∆DSC and ∆BRC

SC = RB (given)

S  R  90

DS = CR (from eq1)

 DSC  BRC (SAS Rule)

SCD = RBC and SDC = RCB (c.p.c.t.)

But, SCD + SDC = 90and RBC + RCB = 90

15
16

SCD + SDC + RBC + RCB = 90+ 90

2SCD + 2BKL = 180

 SCD + BKL = 90

DCB = 90

Similarly, we haveCBA = BAD = ADC = 90. Hence, ABCD is a square.

Question 6

(a) PQ is a segment. The point O is on the perpendicular bisector of segment PQ such

that the length of OP exceeds the length of PQ by 5 cm. If the perimeter of ∆POQ is 25
cm, find the sides of ∆POQ. [3]

Ans:

Let x be the length of AB and y be the length of OQ

O is the point on the perpendicular bisector of PQ.

Hence, O is equidistant from the end points of segment PQ

OP = OQ = y

OP = x  5

Perimeter of ∆POQ = OP + PQ + OQ

25  x  5  x  x  5
25  5  5  3 x
15  3 x

Therefore, length of PQ = 5cm and OP and OQ is 10cm.

(c) The depreciation on machinery at the end of 2nd year is 3600 and at the end of 3rd
year is 3240. Find [4]

i. Rate of depreciation
ii. Original cost of machine
iii. Total depreciation in 3 years
iv. Depreciation for 4th year.

Ans:

i) Depreciation for 2nd year = 3600

Depreciation for 3rd year = 3240

3600  3240
∴Rate of depreciation  100  10%
3600

ii) Let the original cost of machine be 100x

Depreciation for 1st year = 10x

Value of machine in 2nd year = 100 – 10 = 90x

Depreciation for 2nd year = 9x

As it is given the depreciation for 2nd year is 3600

 9 x  3600
x  400
100 x  40000

Therefore, the original cost of machinery is Rs.40,000.

iii) Total depreciation for 3 years is

22
23

Depreciation for 1st year = 40000 10%  4000

Depreciation for 2nd and 3rd year are given to be 3600 and 3240

∴ The depreciation for 3 years = 4000  3600  3240  10840

iv) Depreciation for 4th year

Depreciation for 1st year = 40000 10%  4000

Depreciation for 2nd and 3rd year are given to be 3600 and 3240

The depreciation for 3 years = 4000  3600  3240  10840

Value of Asset at the end of 3rd year = 40000  10840  29160

Depreciation for 4th year = 29160 10%  2916

Question 9

(a) Rs.3000 is invested at compound interest of 10% per annum for 3 yrs. Find the
amount received after 3 yrs and the total interest if: [3]

i) The interest is given half yearly

ii) The interest is given annually

Ans:

i) The interest is given half yearly

P = 3000

R = 5% (as 10% is for 1 year)

N = 6 (twice in every year for 3 yrs)

 A  P(1  R )n

 5 
A  3000 1  
 100 
A  3000 1  0.05 
6

A  3000 1.05 
6

A  3000(1.340)
A  4020

23
24

Therefore, the amount received after 3 yrs is Rs.4020 and the total interest is
4020  3000  Rs.1020

ii) The interest is given annually

P = 3000

R = 10%

N=3

 A  P(1  R )n
3
 10 
A  3000 1  

A  3000 1.10 
3

A  3000(1.331)
A  3993

Therefore, the amount received after 3 yrs is Rs.3993 and the total interest is
3993  3000  Rs.993

2 x  2( y  7 )
2 x  2 y  14
