CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Banking is an important aspect when dealing with money. patel (2004) defined an online
banking system as a web based application that allows individuals to conveniently and securely
deposit and check their account balances online through any web connected device such as a
computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet. This is needed for proper time management..

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE PROBLEM

Banking is the common aspect of keeping money safe. Many people have embarked on this
system in away of saving for unexpected future occurancies(problems)

The study shows that 57% of Ugandans have embarked on banking system where even people in
rural areas have started creating village Cooperatives & Saccos.

The number of people who ernormously visit Banking institutions have grown which makes
people make long queues waiting to access banking premises only to find tellers busy working
on other clients.

They have to wait for tellers to attend to them, some times they spend the whole day with out
being attended to and of which banks close at 5pm

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

People waste a lot of time and resources queuing and waiting to access banking institutions and
at the end of the day, they are caught up by time since banks normaly close at exactly 5pm, they
are referred to the next day which may be inconveniencing and time consuming

Therefore, an Online banking managment System will allow people to check accounts for every
day transactions, save and deposit on their accounts.

2
1.3 OBJECTIVES
1.3.1 MAIN OBJECTIVE
To develop an online banking management system that will enable people access their branches
ranging from banking and financial services

1.3.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

I. To collect and analyse data to meet user requirements.
II. To design a banking System according to the user specifications.
III. To implement the designed Online banking management System
IV. To test and validate the implemented Online Banking management System so that it
meets the user requirements.

1.4 SCOPE
1.4.1 Geographical scope
The case study of the project will be carried out at Banking institutions.

1.4.2 System scope

The online banking System will provide information about e-banking and enable banks to have
close contact with their customers.

1.5. SIGNIFICANCE
The following are the expected outcomes when the research is completed successfully:

I. The project under study will save both the banking institutions and their customers
II. People(clients) will be able to make deposits and check everyday transactions.
III. Banks have different services therefore their customers will automatically receive
information on their Ipads, phones, email addresses with out moving to their branches.
IV. A good image will be portrayed between the banking institution and the people

CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
This chapter contains studies about existing systems related to Online Banking management
system and the objective of this literature review is to learn from the previous studies anddefine
key terms, explain factors that affect banking time, state challenges that personnel encounter,
review and compare similar systems.

2.1 DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS

a) Banks:This are financial institutions which offer different services to the public ie saving and
lending money.

b) Banking:This is the way of keeping money safe

c) Online Banking system:This is a web based application that allows individuals to conveniently
and securely deposit and check their accounts on line through any web connected device such as
computer,laptops,smart phones.

CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOGY

This chapter provides different methods that will be used to aid in gathering of data for analysis
during the study. Various data gathering techniques and approaches will be deployed which will
enable us collect raw information from the field. The tools will be used for the design and
implementation of the Online Banking management system

3.1 Methods to identify System Requirements

This section provides methods for collecting data as well as techniques for analysing data.

3.1.1 Data collection Techniques

a. Document review

During the process of identifying system requirements, data will be collected from document
reviews. Existing literature such as journals, newsletters etc. from the banking sectors
Management and different people will be reviewed.Information will be gathered about the bank
from existing documents and its operations as this will enable the designers to get a general view
of the bank ,from different sources such as reports, newspapers, internet, text books and other
relevant sources of information. Designers will read the existing documents on how online
banking is being done in most parts of the world.

This method has an advantage of providing genuine data since most of the information is first
verified and proved right by more than one person.

5
b. Observations

During the study, observations will be made by the designers on how the banks manages,
coordinates and its clients,. This method will enable researchers to acquire relevant information
which will aid in the design of an online system.

c) Questionnaire

Using this method, questions will be designed and printed out on paper and distributed to two
categories of people, banking secter and the outside population, they will be able to answer them
on management will be given the questionnaires to fill.

3.1.2 Data Analysis

Data analysis will follow immediately after the collection of the raw data from the field. The
information will be processed and tabulated. It will be analyzed using frequencies and
percentages. Excel will be used to tabulate the information.

3.1.3 System Analysis and Design

The analysis of the Online Banking system will require researchers to identify the systems
functional and non-functional requirements that will be used to come up with a full system
design.

The design of the system will be done basing on the requirements after a detailed analysis. The
system design will be made up of preliminary or general design. The features of the new system
are specified and structured. The design of the system will involve database design and
application design. Data flow diagrams that has processes, data store entity relationship diagrams

6
will be used to show the data flow in and out of the system and the relationships among the
different entities respectively.

3.1.4 Methods used for System Implementation

After testing and validation, user acceptance of the new system developed, designers will go on
to the implementation phase. Its phase in the design process where the actual system is made
accessible and loaded into the user’s computer.

The interfaces of the system will be developed using Adobe Dreamweaver, which describes the
general form and layout of documents, CSS for styling web pages and JavaScript to add
dynamism to the web pages and as an input validation tool. MySQL will be used to build the
database and PHP used as a server side scripting language to connect the user interfaces to the
database.

3.1.5 Method of System Testing

After the implementation of the new system into operations, a test run of the system will be
done. It includes verifying that the model will actually startup and run, bench marking model
performance and relative speed/cost of each model components well as checking that the model
restarts exactly Designers will test each module (user interfaces and database). This will help
identification and removal or correction of any potential bug in the system through the help of a
test plan that will be developed and a run on a given set of test data where the output of the test
run should match the expected result. Any unexpected and undesirable output must be noted and
appropriate error corrections or debug made. Testing will help verify that the system will
mechanically operate as specified.

3.1.6 System Validation

Upon the completion of system testing, a validation test will be carried out by the users. The
users will run the Online Banking management System to verify that their requirements have
been met.
