Hyundai star returns to form with second on Rally Sweden after stage-winning heroics
By Graham Lister
Craig Breen hit back from his troubled 2022
season by fighting for victory on Rally Sweden
last weekend.
The 33-year-old Irishman won four stages and led
for large chunks of the World championship counter
only to lose out on a maiden WRC win due to tyre
and hybrid issues on the penultimate day.
Despite having to settle for second to M-Sport’s
title-leading Ott Tanak, Breen said his outing in the
Scandinavian snow had been “absolutely brilliant”.
He added: “We can be very proud of what we’ve
achieved. It leaves me hungry for the future now.”
Breen’s Hyundai boss Cyril Abiteboul said the
team’s returning star had “been mega all weekend”
and praised his “speed and performance” alongside
co-driver James Fulton.
There was more Irish success in Sweden when
Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy pair William
Breen was on form Creighton and Liam Regan won the Junior WRC
season opener by 0.6 seconds in a dramatic finish.

that was so impressive.
His bosses at Hyundai were left with a little egg on their faces too.
With Breen only contesting a partial campaign, they asked the second-
placed driver to throttle back and allow the title-chasing Thierry
Neuville to motor into runner-up position. However, a late slip-up by
the Belgian meant that it was in vain and Breen held on to his position.
