What has Friends given us?

On 27 May, Friends will be released on HBO: Together again (Friends: The Reunion), which
will reunite the cast of the iconic series in an as yet undetermined genre. The story does not
continue: the actors come together as themselves, not in their roles, for a reunion-style nostalgia
show. In this article, we'll take a look at what has made Friends such a strong, lasting impact, and
the criticisms surrounding the series that have been increasingly vocal in recent years about its
flaws.

Loving Friends is fundamental: it's like loving Harry Potter or burgers. What makes a
person special is not to like it - and if you don't know it or haven't seen at least some of it, it's
almost incomprehensible even today, in 2021. The series has become a point of reference, but in
recent years, more and more people have pointed out that there are still a lot of problems with the
characters and the story from today's point of view. But really it just goes to show that many
people still feel it needs to be talked about.

It's been exactly 17 years since the last episode of Friends ran, but we're still using its
catchphrases, making lists of the top 10-50-100-236 episodes, and the personality tests that
decide whether we should be Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler or Ross. Fans have been
waiting for years for a sequel of any kind, with Netflix buying the rights to the series for
hundreds of millions of dollars for just one year. Millions of people are curious about the
nostalgic, but actually totally meaningless trailer for the reunion. And alongside the never-ending
adoration, for years there have been articles about what a toxic character Ross really was, how
unrealistic the lifestyles of the main characters in the series were, how there were no minority
characters, and how damaging it was how dealt with gender identity, fatness, sexual or
workplace harassment.
