Case scenario 1

Ms. Rachelle is a Math teacher who just started her lesson on multiplying decimals. Ms. Rachelle
started by explaining how to multiply decimals, gave an example on the board and then asked
her students to solve the problems in the book. By the end of the session, Ms. Rachelle gave her
students an exit slip with a question to solve. Based on the results of the exit slips, she noticed
that 15 out of 20 students were not able to answer the question correctly. Ms. Rachelle came to
class next session with manipulatives. She revisited the topic and gave her students the
opportunity to practice multiplying decimals using these manipulatives. Ms. Rachelle then used
a hinge question to check for her students’ understanding. Results from this assessment showed
that most of the students were able to answer correctly.
