A.
This fairy-tale city is situated in the western Ukrainian countryside and has
gained its fame with tourists owing to the Fortress. The beauty of this place
lies in its cobbled streets lined with beautiful pastel-colored houses and street
murals depicting the history of the city.
The picturesque Fortress, towering over the river Smotrycz, is the main reason
for you to include this city in the list of Ukrainian places to visit. You will also
love exploring this idyllic town on foot — taking a walk through the cobbled
streets of this mediaeval old town.
B.
Last winter I had the opportunity to visit this place. I have read about the
power station with the sarcophagus and about the creepy, abandoned
kindergarten, but I have never heard about DUGA… one of the craziest sights
I’ve seen in my entire life. My heart truly skipped a beat when I found myself
in front of this gigantic and super-secret Soviet radar 500 metres long and 90
metres high.
The existence of DUGA was kept a secret until recently — access to this place
was strictly forbidden until 2013. If you see it, you’ll agree that it looks scary as
hell! However, I highly recommend visiting it — it’s one of the weirdest sights
I’ve ever seen!
C.
Located in the Kherson region of Ukraine, it is the biggest uninhabited island
in the Black Sea and a natural reserve, with some rare species. While it is
increasing in popularity with Ukrainians, it is still quite unknown to foreign
tourists. Well, it isn’t the easiest place to get to.
There are a few ferries a day going to Dzharylhach from the mainland and if
you want to stay overnight you have to camp. The water is crystal clear and
you will often see dolphins playing around close to the shore. Don’t forget to
try the famous stingray borsch at the beach hut before you leave!
D.
Not all Ukrainians are aware that the biggest desert in Europe that can also
be seen from space, is situated in the Kherson region. The territory is covered
by sand dunes and barchans 5 metres high, formed as a result of wind effects.
It is very hot in the Ukrainian desert during the summer season. In the
afternoon, the temperature rises to 44–45°C, and the sand heats up to 70–
75°C. Therefore, the best time for a trip is between the end of April and the
beginning of June. At this time, you can take a walk deep into the desert and
see fields of blooming poppies among the sand dunes.
