Installation
Can I install and use DIFFRAC.EVA on computers running Microsoft Windows 10?
DIFFRAC.EVA V4.3 until V5.1 are fully compatible with Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, and
Windows Embedded 2009.
DIFFRAC.EVA V5.2 is fully compatible with Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.
I cannot read EVA files created with older versions anymore after an update to a newer
version. What is the reason?
This could be caused by an incomplete installation. This may happen if a newer EVA version is
installed over an older version without uninstalling the older version first.
To fix this:
- Uninstall the current EVA version.
- Remove any remaining installation folder, if it still exists. It is usually located in
“C:\Program Files(x86)\Bruker AXS\DIFFRAC.EVA.Vx.y”.
- Install the new EVA version again.
I get an error regarding “WibuCmNET” if I try to start EVA V4.1. What is the reason?
The error message indicates that an older DIFFRAC.EVA version has been installed after installing
V4.1:
As a rule, if several versions should be installed in parallel, they have to be installed in ascending
order. The newer version must be installed always after the older version.
How can I workaround the installer error which aborts the installation because of a
“not a valid user or group”?
The error message is similar to this:
The reason is that the “Language for non-Unicode programs” differs from the Display language
(Control Panel, Keyboards and Languages):
Solution: set the language back to the Display language and run the setup again.
Search/Match databases
http://www.icdd.com/support/downloads.htm
Please note that the patch must be applied after installing the ICDD database. If the database was
installed prior installing DIFFRAC.EVA is will be automatically applied by EVA’s installation program.
Otherwise it must be installed manually.
I see three letter sub-files instead of names in the database filters. What is the reason?
From time to time, the ICDD databases receive a sub-file addition. This is taken into account in newer
versions of the DSRD compiler. If older EVA versions are still in use in parallel to the most recent
version, the database filters show only the sub-files which were known at creation time of the older
EVA version.
The following sub-files have been added in EVA V4.3, which will be shown as three letter
abbreviations in older versions:
After clicking the „Check Selected License“ button, the following message will be displayed:
The procedure is described in the user manual in chapter “Compiling the Reference Database using
the DSRD Compiler”.
The DSRD compiler reports an error after starting a PDF compilation “Database
license is missing. Please retrieve a license from the database vendor”. What do I
have to do?
An example for the error message is given below:
This is caused by an expired license for an already installed database. Please use the database
software to retrieve and install a license for the database. A typical ICDD license dialog is displayed
below:
The DSRD compiler reports an error after starting a PDF compilation “Unable to
connect to database”. What can I do?
“Error while building MIN2011 – PDF-4 Minerals 2011 RDB
ERROR [HY000] [Sybase][ODBC Driver][SQL Anywhere]RAISERROR was executed:
Unable to connect to database. Please verify that you have a valid license and the product is installed
successfully. Contact the ICDD at 610-325-9814 for technical support.”
This is caused by a failed ICDD software installation. The file OEMSTARTUP.DLL was not updated
during ICDD software setup while the DSRD compiler or DIFFRAC.EVA was running. The ICDD
software installation does not report the error or requires a reboot.
Workaround: Close DIFFRAC.EVA, the DRSD Compiler and any ICDD software. Restart the
computer. Uninstall the ICDD PDF database. Restart the computer. Install the ICDD PDF database
again. Restart the DSRD compiler. Keep DIFFRAC.EVA closed during the whole installation and
compilation process!
The DSRD compiler reports an error after starting a PDF compilation “Internal
database error”. What can I do?
The error message is similar to:
“[Sybase][ODBC driver][SQL Anywhere] Internal database error***ERROR
***Assertion failed: 201129 (12.0.1.3519)[PDF2012]
File is shorter than expected – transaction rolled back”
The most likely reason is that DIFFRAC.EVA was running while the ICDD software was installed.
Workaround: Close DIFFRAC.EVA, the DRSD Compiler and any ICDD software. Restart the
computer. Reinstall the ICDD PDF database. Restart the DSRD compiler.
The DSRD compiler displays a “Data source name too long” error message. Why?
This happens if one tries to compile a PDF database which has no longer a valid license, e.g. with an
expired evaluation license.
Please proceed as described in: The DSRD compiler reports an error after starting a PDF compilation
“Database license is missing. Please retrieve a license from the database vendor”. What do I have to
do?”
I have created a large set of custom pattern data in a DIFFRACplus EVA user database.
Can I still use this database with DIFFRAC.EVA?
Yes, a user database conversion option was added to the DSRD compiler starting with DIFFRAC.EVA
V3.2. Please refer to the “DIFFRAC.EVA User Manual” for a description how to use it.
I observed that S/M candidates are not corresponding to the chemical filter. What is
wrong?
There was a bug in the DSRD Compiler for patterns which had a delta sign in the formula until
DIFFRAC.EVA V3.1. Such patterns were always present in the result list if their FOM was high enough
regardless of the chemical filter. This has been fixed in V3.2’s DSRD Compiler (Bug #3372).
I want to re-use my old DIFFRACplus Match Files (*.mtc). How can I do this?
DIFFRAC.EVA has a feature called Filters in the Search/Match tool which effectively give the same
functionality as the Match files in DIFFRACplus EVA. The following steps are required to convert a
Match file into a DIFFRAC.EVA filter:
▪ Start DIFFRACplus EVA with an empty document. The toolbox should be visible.
▪ Open Search Results (key F4) and click “Read”.
▪ Select the match file and click “Open”.
▪ Mark all patterns in the list and drag them with the mouse in the toolbox.
▪ Select all patterns in in the toolbox.
▪ Save the EVA document.
▪ Open the DIFFRACplus EVA document in DIFFRAC.EVA. The patterns will be imported into
the data tree into a pattern list.
▪ Select the Pattern List node that contains all patterns read from the document.
▪ Open the context menu and click on “Select Children”.
▪ Open the context menu and click on “Copy”.
▪ Load a raw file and open the “Search by Name” tool.
▪ In the Search List, use the “Create a New List” button to create a new Match List.
▪ Use the Paste button to fill the list from the clipboard.
▪ Click the “Save” button, enter a name for the Match List and click on “Write”.
I have a mix of high- and low-resolution screens and the software looks blurry on the
low-resolution screen. Can I fix this?
The quality of the result may depend on the operating system. If your main screen has a lower
resolution try to make this the main display, log out and log in again. This worked for Windows 10
version 1809.
If I click in a PIP or VIP region the properties of my data object disappear. How can I
get them back?
The reason is that after a click into a PIP or VIP area its properties are automatically displayed. If I
click on my data object the corresponding properties are no displayed automatically. To re-display the
properties which were shown before click on the desired object in the tree.
I use Windows 7 with an Aero theme enabled. The DIFFRAC.EVA controls are
sometimes very slow to operate. How can I speed this up?
In certain graphics adapters/drivers configurations the Aero theme decelerates the DIFFRAC.EVA
user interface. In this case, switch Aero off by selecting a classic theme in the Control Panel:
- Open the Control Panel and select the Display item.
- Click on “Personalization” in the left menu.
- Select a theme from the “Basic and High Contrast Themes”
Why is no ghost displayed for a pattern which is directly attached to the document?
The ghost is not displayed because there is no parent scan available. The ghost is generally
connected to the scan in DIFFRAC.EVA.
I have selected all data below a node (e.g. a scan list). Why is there no property list
displayed after I click “Edit multiple properties” in the Properties panel?
If the selected data nodes are not all of the same type (e.g. scans with peaks or patterns as children)
editing of multiple properties is not possible. Use the command “Select Children” on the parent node to
make sure that only data of the same type are selected.
I have sent an EVA file which contains 2D frames to a partner but the frames are not
displayed in the partner’s EVA program. Why?
The most likely reason is that you forgot to send the binary file which has the same name as the EVA
file but an extra “.BIN” file extension. This file contains the frames.
Another reason is that the partner does not have the required version 3 or the license for version 3.
This should be no issue anymore starting with EVA V3.2 files because the binary file became part of
the EVA file.
But this can lead to another issue: some email servers erroneously classify the BIN part in the EVA
document as potentially dangerous code and remove it from the EVA file (possibly quietly). As a
result, EVA files which contain frames and EVA files which contain data for pattern matching are not
complete anymore. In that case please use another means than email to transfer the EVA files.
How can I link brml, raw and eva file to DIFFRAC.EVA so that they will be opened by a
double-click?
This feature is available and has been installed beginning with DIFFRAC.EVA V2.0.
If opening the file with a double click does not work, the Windows Explorer context menu item “Open
with | Choose default program…” can be used to link the program “EVALauncher.exe” which is located
in the DIFFRAC.EVA installation folder.
Why do some raw files or brml files do not allow background subtraction?
Follow these steps to reproduce the issue:
- Import the file
- Select the scan and click Tool/Background subtraction
- The Background Dialog Window appears
- Change the drop-down to “Background Subtraction”
- At this time the background-subtracted scan will be displayed on the screen.
- Close the Background Dialog Window
- The Background subtracted scan should disappear simultaneously with the window.
Here you can type in any Ka1 value as long as the Anode material remains empty. This Ka1 value will
be referenced when doing search/match (Ka1 = 0 defaults to Cu radiation). Click okay and then import
your scan.
The .xye (or .xy) file should not contain an anode material in the header line. This would override the
wavelength in EVA’s settings.
How can I detect with which DIFFRAC.EVA version an EVA file was written?
Follow these steps.
- If the file has a binary format starting with the letters “”PK” unzip the file into a directory
- Open the *.EVA file which is in XML format
- Locate the entry “Header” at the beginning of the file and its child entry “CreatorVersion”
- Select the document node and locate the “Document Version” property. It has only a value if a
document was loaded, not for newly created documents.
The EVA versions and the corresponding internal versions are given in the following table:
Other version numbers with values in between indicate that the documents were written by test
versions with limited release.
Printing
I changed the print layout in the Print preview’s toolbar but the graphics display or the
tables did not change
The print layout in the toolbar refers only to the global print settings which are contained on the
“Report Layout”, “Header/Footer” and “Watermark” tabs on the Print Preview’s right side.
Changes on the “Parts” tab are only saved on the document, but not in the print layout. To make
changes for the parts permanent the print properties in the Settings dialog must be modified. These
settings are applied to newly created documents.
Note: Changes on the “Report Layout”, “Header/Footer” and “Watermark” tabs are not saved in the
document. If they shall be made permanent, the print layout must be saved.
I want to print a table with rows and columns swapped. How can I do this?
All column views have a property “Vertical Table” in the “Printing” property group. Switching this on will
print a table where the rows and columns are swapped compared to the view’s default on-screen
display.
I changed the scan description, but the print preview title does not change. What is
wrong?
There is a misunderstanding between the scan’s description, which can be used in the legend and the
view’s description, which is used to create the title for the print. If you change the view’s description it
will be reflected in the print.
Miscellaneous
EVA reacts with strange error messages or exhibits unusual behavior after installing
There is a small chance that the installation was not correctly carried out due to other active processes
which are not visible for the user.
The first step in this case is to uninstall DIFFRAC.EVA, reboot the computer and install DIFFRAC.EVA
anew. The rebooting cleans the memory from all unwanted processes and allows a clean install.
Why does DIFFRAC.EVA require a login and how can I get rid of it?
The “DIFFRAC.EVA” shortcut in the Start Menu will start the program without database connection.
The second shortcut “DIFFRAC.EVA (database access)” with start the program with a connection to
the Bruker AXS database. If a database is present, a login dialog appears during startup. After login
measurements and project files can be loaded from the database as well as from the file system.
Please note that the database connection is always required for a 21 CFR PART 11 installation.
CodeMeter
Lately I have not been able to see deleted files in the Recycle Bin. When I remove the
CM-Stick (CodeMeter), the files appear again.
To fix this problem, the CM-Stick’s state must be changed from a local disk to a removable disk.
1. Open the command line console (e.g. Start > Run... and then type cmd)
2. Change to the current directory to C:\Program Files\CodeMeter\Runtime\bin
3. Type the following:
Please replace the ******** with the serial number of the user’s CmStick.
The serial number can be found on the CodeMeter key itself. Alternatively, the CodeMeter Control
Panel can be opened to retrieve the CmStick’s serial number.
Type “Exit” to close the command prompt. Unplug and re-plug the CmStick.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in Windows 7 and provides a Hotfix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2677246
A) Preliminary Remarks
If the user is logged in without admin rights the folder DSRD or the Tutorial folder of EVA will not be
visible.
These files are contained in subfolders of C:\ProgramData which are hidden for users without admin
rights.
Click on the Start button and open DIFFRAC.Evaluation V1.x or DIFFRAC.EVA Vx.y, depending on the
installed version.
A submenu "Bruker AXS Data" will become visible. Click on the folder to open.
B) Access in DIFFRAC.EVA
Next, the user should access e.g. one file from the tutorial in DIFFRAC.EVA.
Even when starting the EVA/Import Scan... this folder will remain hidden.
1.) Select the "Bruker AXS Data" and click the right mouse button. A submenu will appear.
2.) Select the "Bruker AXS Data", click the right mouse button and include the data into the new
library EVAaccess.
3.) Now, the \Tutorial in DIFFRAC.EVA can be accessed via Import Scan.
We recommend that these changes are only carried out by experienced computer users or a
system administrator. More detailed information can be found on Microsoft’s web site.
Windows XP
1. Open a Command Prompt.
