Literature Searching Tasks

Instruction: The following graph is important in helping you find the most relevant
and updated research articles of your interest. Now assume that you read the
following article:

Yeldham, M. (2016). Second Language Listening Instruction: Comparing a strategies‐based approach

with an interactive, strategies/bottom‐up skills approach. TESOL Quarterly, 50(2), 394-420.

To establish your understanding of this field, you’ll have to read articles as illustrated in the following
graph. Now please use Web of Science (WOS) or other tools to answer the following questions:

1. List at least 3 articles that cite this one (Yeldham, 2016). Why is it important
to search articles that cite this one?
 Kissling, E.M. (2018). Pronunciation Instruction Can Improve L2 Learners'
Bottom-Up Processing for Listening. The Modern Language Journal,
102(4), 653-675. https://doi.org/10.1111/modl.12512
 Xu, J. and Qiu, X.Y. (2023). Study abroad experiences count: Motivational
profile of EFL listeners and its impact on top-down and bottom-up
processing. Applied Linguistics Review, 14 (1), 145-172.
https://doi.org/10.1515/applirev-2020-0037
 Yanagawa, K. (2022). The role of bottom-up strategy instruction and
proficiency level in L2 listening test performance: an intervention study.
https://doi.org/10.1080/09658416.2022.2161557
In my opinion, it is important to search for articles that cite Yeldham (2016)
because it allows researchers to understand how the study has been received and
used by other scholars in the field. It also helps researchers identify any new
research topic or question that has built upon or challenged the findings of the
original study.

2. What does “related records” mean?

Ans: Based on the findings on the website of Clarivate Analytics, “Related records”
refer to data records in a database that are related to a specific article or publication.
Articles that cite the same works would have a subject relationship. For example, if
we are looking at an article about a specific topic, we can see all the other articles
that cite that article, or that are cited by that article.

3. Now assume that you are interested in the field of second language listening
strategies. After you read Yeldham’s (2016) article, please list 3 articles you
plan to read further. Why and How did you find those articles?
Based on the search results and related records on Web of Science, here are three
articles that I plan to read further:
 Dalman, M., & Plonsky, L. (2022). The effectiveness of second-language
listening strategy instruction: A meta-analysis. TESOL Quarterly,
56(1), 1-28. https://doi.org/10.1002/tesq.233
 Milliner, B., & Dimoski, B. (2021). The effects of a metacognitive
intervention on lower-proficiency EFL learners' listening
comprehension and listening self-efficacy.
https://doi.org/10.1177/13621688211004646
 Yanagawa, K. (2022). The role of bottom-up strategy instruction and
proficiency level in L2 listening test performance: an intervention
study. Language Testing, 39(1), 3-23.
https://doi.org/10.1080/09658416.2022.2161557

I found these articles by searching for related articles on second language

listening strategies. I used the keywords "second language listening strategies,"
"listening strategy instruction," and "EFL learners’ listening proficiency" to find
articles that are related to Yeldham's (2016) study. I also looked for articles that
had a higher number of citations to ensure that they were relevant and reliable.
These articles will help me gain a better understanding of the effectiveness of
different listening strategies, and how they can be used to improve lower-
proficiency EFL learners’ listening comprehension.
