AUTOMATIC
VEHICLE LOCATION
AVL was a system that provided up to date location
information for emergency vehicles, delivery trucks,
freight trucks, service vehicles, etc.
The AVL system primarily consisted of a GPS
receiver on the truck or vehicle, a communications
link between the vehicle and the dispatcher, web
based tracking software and a digital map.
Communication between the GPS receiver and the
server could happen via a GSM or CDMA network
using SMS or GPRS
ADVANTAGES BENEFICIARIES
Ability to locate and send the nearest vehicle Transportation: Real time fleet management
to the customer services
Greater number of pickups and deliveries per Emergency Vehicles: Law enforcement, fire
day and paramedic services
Increased on time deliveries Utilities: Locating nearest available vehicle to
Increased number of vehicles that a respond to a service
dispatcher could manage Delivery services: Courier, newspapers and
Tracking report documentation fast food where prompt customer service was
critical.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
1. Low Fleet Utilization:
Overall fleet utilization is low, especially for bag trucks.
The discrepancy between truck capacity and active operation time leads to underutilization.
2. Significant Idling Time:
Fleet exhibits considerable idling time, impacting efficiency and increasing operational costs.
Understanding the nature of idling time (during trips, at checkpoints, or between deliveries) is crucial for
addressing the issue.
3. Varied Trip Times and Frequencies:
Analysis shows variations in trip durations and frequencies among tracked trucks, especially bag trucks.
Understanding the reasons behind these variations is vital for effective route planning and resource allocation.
4. Associated Costs of AVL Implementation:
A breakdown of AVL system costs includes GPS equipment, digital maps, broadband connection, infrastructure,
spares, and monthly expenses.
Need to assess whether incurred costs align with expected benefits and improvements in fleet management.

APPROACH FOR THE AVL
SYSTEM
1. Identification of the Time Spent by the Truck in the Parking Bay:
Georeference the entire parking bay taking into consideration a tolerance factor
of 15%
2. Identification of the Time Spent Inside the Plant Area:
a. Use the same Georeference option and mark the factory
b. Use RFID technology
3. Understanding the Driving Pattern of a Driver:
Understand all the given routes for delivery and add way points on these routes.
Also to monitor this data and improvise route/driver efficiency.
4. Capturing Delivery Compliance:
Adding dealer network in Georeferenced database. The moment the vehicle
approached the dealer, their system would identify the dealer and intimate them
about the arrival.
