The father took, the infant in his arms, held it up before a gathering of villagers, and whispered in its ear, the name hé had chosen for it. Only then was the name announced to everyone else, for it was the belief among those people “that each human being should be the first to know who he was.” Alex Haley, a man of fifty-five, belonging to the seventh generation of his family in America, undertook a journey to find out about himself among the people who live where his ancestors lived, to find out who in fact he is. Asa boy, Alex Haley was lucky to have been around a grandmother who had an improbably' long memory of her ancestry. She passed on to him, information about the origins of their family. They came here, after all, in slavery, an institution to serve and provide cheap and economic Inbour to run the plantations of tobacco, coiton and sugarcane; that severed almost all their ties to Africa—to birthplace, lineages. religion, language, and names, Her memory of that name, Kinteh, along with her other memories, has now paid the remarkable dividend of “Roots,” in which Haley traces his family’s origins in Africa, renders the history of his family from before the slave ships. through slavery, and into the present. Briefly, the story was about “the African.” He was brought to this country in a slave ship that docked at a place called *Naplis, he was bought by a Waller family, who lived in Virginia; he worked as a buggy driver on the Waller plantation; married the big-house cook, named Bell, by whom he had a daughter, named Kizay To young Kizzy he told the history of his life in Aftica, and of how, when he was out in the forest one day, cutting wood to make a frame for a drum, ie was set upon by slavers, seized, and dragged to a slave ship, Chained with other captives, Kunta began an agonized odyssey to the New World, the colonial United States. They said there was no question about what Kamby Bolongo meant: it meant the Gambia River. They told him that what he called, or spelled, “Kin-fay?-was Kinteb, and that it was a well-known family name in The Gambia. Broke from having spent almost everything he had on his tesearch; Haley raised enough money for “mini-safari” up the Gambia River. ‘The safari took him to the village of Juffure, where one of the griots lived and where his own ancestor, (as claimed by Haley) Kunta Kinte, had been born and raised. This is Haley's report: “The griot said that the Kine clan belonged to a place called Old Mali. The men traditionally were blacksmiths, the women potters and weavers. Kairaba Kinte—a holy man joumeyed down the country called "The Gambia’ and settled in the village called Fuffure. His descendant Omoro had four sons, the eldest being Kunta. “About the time the King’s soldiers came, Kunta, went away from his village to chop twood, He was never scen again...” And the griot went on with his narrative, The griot had spoken of “the time the King’s soldiers came:" What.lime was that? And what did be mean by the king's soldiers? Continuing his research in one of the archives in London, Haley found a reference to “Colonel O'Haze’s forces, cnt from London in (767, 10 guard the then British-operated Fort James Slave Fort on the Gambia River.” Kinte was captured and taken to a farm in Virginia where he continued his American heritage.
