A Raisin in the Sun Character Analysis Essay

Travis Younger is a very interesting and sweet character. He is a young boy from A Raisin in

the Sun. He is the son of Walter and Ruth Younger. He’s a minor character. But he is still

important as he is important to his parents and grandmother. Travis is a happy kid, he doesn’t

really want any more than he has, and he is oblivious to the idea of a better life because to him

his life is good.

Travis has a pretty happy life. He doesn’t really complain and usually does what he’s told. He

is a happy boy who loves his family. Even though he lives in a poor apartment he doesn’t seem

to notice it much. He is usually very excited and likes to play with his friends as most little boys

do.

For just about the entire story Travis is just there for the family to have someone to want a

better life for. His father wants to own a liquor store so that he can have money to give Travis

whatever he wants. His grandmother wants a house so Travis can have his own room and a

comfortable place to live. His mother wants Travis to have somewhere safe to live. So Many of

the characters actually revolve around Travis.

He doesn’t change in the story because he doesn’t have to. He just has to be sweet and there to

give the other characters a motive. If Travis wasn’t there the characters wouldn’t have a motive

for what they want or it would be completely different.

So despite the fact that he doesn’t have a huge role in the story and is just a happy content kid.

Without him, the story would be very different. His family would have different motives and the

audience wouldn’t have a sweet little character that’s different than the serious adults.
