Question 1
A compound gear train is shown in the figure below. The gears have the following properties:

Gear 2 N2 = 15 teeth
Gear 3 d3 = 5 in. and Pd = 18
Gear 4 N4 = 15 teeth
Gear 5 d5 = 5 in. and Pd = 15
Gear 6 d6 = 5 in.
Gear 7 N7 = 15 teeth
Gear 8 N8 = 60 teeth

Determine the rotational velocity of gear 8 as gear 2 drives at 3600 rpm CW.

Question 2

A pinion having 30 teeth drives a gear having 80 teeth. The profile of the gears is involute with a pressure

angle of 20 .The module is m = 12 mm and the addendum is a = 10 mm.
Compute the length of action, the base pitch and the contact ratio.

Question 3

Design a compound, reverted, spur gear train for a ratio of 56:1 and a diametral pitch of 8 in-1. Specify the
number of teeth in each gear and the pitch diameters. Check the overall gear ratio.
Note: from interference criteria, no gear should have fewer than 12 teeth and greater than 130 teeth.

Question 4
Two 20˚, full depth, involute spur gears (diametral pitch = 10 in-1) are to be mounted 12 inches apart and
have a velocity ratio of 5:1.
a. Find the pitch diameters and the number of teeth on both gears.
b. Find the base pitches and the diameters of the base circles of both gears
c. Find the diameters of addendum and dedendum circles of both gears.

Question 5

The compound gear train shown below is used for the operation of “reverse” for a three-speed automotive
transmission. If the shaft G is turning with an angular velocity of ωG= 60 rad/s clockwise, determine the
rotational velocity of gears B, C, D, E and F. Calculate the gear ratio for this compound gear train.

Question 6
A planetary gear train is shown in the figure below. The arm (link 2) serves as the input to the train. The
sun (gear 1) is fixed and has a 1.25-in pitch diameter with a diametral pitch of 16. Gear 3 has 42 teeth and
gear 4 has 21 teeth. Gear 5 has 32 teeth and is keyed to the same shaft as gear 4. Gear 5 mates with the ring
gear (gear 6), which serves as the output from the train and has 144 teeth.

a. Determine the rotational velocity of all members of this gear train when the input shaft rotates at 680
rpm clockwise

Question 7
A compound-planetary gear train is shown in the figure below. The gears A and C are free to rotate
independently about axis E. The planet gear B rotates on pin F on the end of arm EF. All the gears have the
same diametral pitch. The numbers of teeth are:
NA = 72 teeth, NB = 20 teeth, NC = 32 teeth.
a) If the angular velocity of the arm EF is 18 rpm CCW and gear A is fixed, find the angular
velocity of gears B and C.
b) If the angular velocity of the arm EF is 18 rpm CCW and gear C is rotating 9 rpm CW, find
the angular velocity of gears B and A.
