12 TIPS TO WRITE A PEC

1) TITLE: PEC 1 Literatura inglesa II + your name

2) FORMAT: Doc

3) PLAGIARISM: using someone else’s text without documenting your source is

plagiarism, whether you meant to do it or not. Plagiarism has serious consequences.
Therefore do not construct your PEC by copying and pasting paragraphs from the
internet or from the bibliography. Make sure you write your own words and use
quoting when necessary. You should show you are familiar with the set readings and
the bibilography but not reproduce the ideas literally. You should write a creative and
original essay.

4) Do not exceed the word limit.

5) STRUCTURE: organize the ideas coherently into different paragraphs and make
sure you write an introduction and a conclusion.

6) COHESION: make sure you produce a cohesive text by using the linkers
(conjunctions) properly.

7) COMPARISON: when asked to compare and contrast two works (A and B) do not
write separately in blocks about the works without comparing them. Consider the
following tips:

a) First, think about a list of similarities and differences between the works.

b) Make sure you use expressions such as:

Like, similar to, also, unlike, similarly, in the same way, likewise, again, compared to, in
contrast, in like manner, contrasted with, on the contrary, however, although, yet, even
though, still, but, nevertheless, conversely, at the same time, regardless, despite, while,
on the one hand … on the other hand.

c) You can use the “Point by point method” throughout the essay. It is an alternating
method that highlights similarities and differences by juxtaposing your points about A
and B.

8) TONE: use a cautious style using, for example, the following words:

VERBS: appear, suggest, indicate

MODALS: may/might, can/could, will/would

ADVERBS: possibly, probably, likely

Avoid expressions such as “undoubtedly, “there is no doubt”, “we can surely say” as
they sound too definite.

9) Avoid using pronouns like “I” or “you” in formal writing. Instead of “money can
make you independent” “money can make a person independent” or "depending on the
money you have access to” “depending on the money people have access to (or a
person has access to)”

10) Avoid colloquialisms and slang expressions.

11) Avoid contractions

12) Check grammar, punctuation, spelling and capitalisation before submitting.
