scientists — Kepler, Newton, Pascal, Mendel, James — pro-
claimed that there was more to life and existence than the
obviously physical and measurable.
Long before Freud, it was Horace, the wise Roman poet,
who declared that nature could not be suppressed nor forever
denied. Man’s natural need and special ability to respond with
his full being to a universe outside himself has reasserted itself
in this latter part of the twentieth century with the explosive
power of a super volcano. Man’s interest in the supernatural
is not only the oldest of his outreaching experiences, not only
his most distinguishing quality, but through it he has created
the most essential of his disciplines; it is the source of all his
highest powers; it is the mother lode of all the episodes of his
progress; it has produced not only the phenomena of the
psychic, the mystic, the occult, but also his religions, his lit-
eratures, his sciences. All the more strange then that so dis-
tinctively human a dimension has so seldom received the
systematic codification that man’s other disciplines have had.
When the legendary philosopher Empedocles, who was also
an eminent mystic, rhetorician, and scientist, formulated
the concept that the four elements of all being were earth.
water, fire, and air, he set in motion a theory that led eventu-
ally to Mendeleyev’s seminal discovery of the periodic tables.

pedias and dictionaries, in like manner, perform the im.
mensely important function of making masses of information
available in a structured and ordered sequence. Because 0!
this virtue they have become a valuable instrument in the
evolution of man’s development. Accordingly, the editors o:
this dictionary have held this purpose as their touchstone ir
the writing of this reference work.
To achieve this high ideal, however, a good dictionary mus
possess a number of special qualities if it is adequately tc
serve its particular discipline. Starting with the assumptior
that the psychic, mystic, and occult are acknowledged to be
the most ancient of all man’s disciplines, a prime considera:
tion for this volume must be its coverage: to be meaningfu

it must go deep and be wide in scope. In addition to its com-
prehensiveness, it must also be eclectic and unbiased in its
presentation of material. While it must aim for the highest
in clarity, precision in its definitions and choice of terminol-
ogy, it should at the same time utilize the most modern lin-
guistic perceptions where they can add any dimension to our
insights. And it goes without saying that such a dictionary,
always keeping the reader uppermost in mind, should make
‘its contents readily and easily accessible. It should be so in-
clusive in presentation that the reader gets all the information
he requires in the one book he is consulting. Finally, every
effort should be made not only to use words carefully but also,
when pertinent, imaginatively; that is, to choose from the
body of language just those combinations of words that will
enable the reader to get at least a sense of the intuitive and
ineffable experience of a Boehme, a Buber, or a Mrs. Piper.
Having listed our standards, it may be of service to the
reader if we also display some of our problems. As hinted at
above, a dictionary such as this one embodies a domain which
is, by its very nature, absolutely unique. Much of the material
we must describe emanates from the realm of the indefinable.
Now no two readers are alike in their experience and/or
sensitivity, and while this also applies to the feedback the
reader absorbs from any dictionary (and every language
event), it is most markedly so in the area of the supernatural
sciences. Since words are not the things or-the experiences
themselves but merely signs, they are, in consequence, both
precise and imprecise at the same time — precise when
properly defined on the verbal level, but imprecise since, at
best, they can only partially describe actualities. Mainly, how-
ever, language is unique to each user — and each time he
uses it; for the act of using language is a creative operation,
beginning with childhood and on through life. Therefore the
same definitions will not only give somewhat different res-
onances to different readers (no matter how precise the
definition), but, even more significantly, the same reader will

get different insights from the same definition at different
stages of his existence.
It is well to understand at once that in presenting a dict-
ionary of the psychic, the mystic, the occult, we are doing,
then, what from one point of view is quite impossible. Any-
one, for example, who has ever had supernatural experiences
knows that this immediately puts them outside the framework
of physical descriptions. However, what confronts us here
is, fundamentally, the old philosophical paradox: universal
terms — “horse,” “red,” “the good,” — exist nowhere in the
actual world except in the head of the user. Despite this,
Plato’s “Ideas,” now called universals, is so necessary a con-
cept and deduction that without it there can be no productive
thinking. Again, if your friend tells you, “My head aches
badly,” you hear the words but cannot feel — certainly not
with the same intensity — your friend’s headache. Words, in
every case, not only in the realm of the supernatural, are an
inadequate substitute for actual events.
If all this applies, then why the present dictionary? Even
more, when man talks of stones, grass, autos, pains, ecsta-
cies, if his words are not the things or experiences themselves,
why then does man delude himself by using words? The an-
swer, really, is very simple: it belongs in that category which -
is labelled necessity. Man uses words because he must — be-
cause he has no better tool available. Gestures and noises
keep him forever at the level of insects and animals. No, man
has dared to do the impossible — he has created signs which
only approximate things and events, but by doing so he has tri-
umphed. For insofar as man has developed his human ca-
pacities, this growth is directly proportional to the growth of
the marvelous storehouse of words that he has accumulated
from the life and work of men like Abraham, Aristotle, Bud-
dha, Shakespeare, Galileo, Gandhi; he has utilized what was
initially the crudest of tools to fashion this magnificent cre-
ation. The history of man’s language is the long history of
refining a crude tool into an increasingly superior instrument.

And this brings us to one of the vital qualities of language
— its method of evolving. Although the syntactic base of lan-
guage — the way words are put together — changes very
slowly, nothing changes more readily nor responds to ex-
istence more steadily than the semantic element. Only yes-
terday, for example, words like “psychic,” “mystic,” “occult,”
“ESP,” “supernatural” had a pejorative connotation, they
were tainted with the smell of ignorance, yet today they have
acquired a newborn status and have become most respectable
and pleasing to the modern spirit.
In fact, so important have these areas of experience become
for our period that many scholars and artists from such di-
verse disciplines as anthropology and literature to philosophy,
sociology, and religion have added much new relevant materi-
al to these disciplines, resulting in new orientations and
evaluations. We have sought to incorporate these new ex-
plorations in the present dictionary in order to make it as
useful and significant to the reader as possible. The privilege
of being a forerunner has, of course, its own rewards, and we
present this dictionary in the belief that the reader will find it
a worthy asset in whatever way he may need its information.

Absolute, the Ultimate ground of all reality — Brahma,
God. It is the Absolute with which all mystics unite in
an ecstacy of oneness. However named, the Absolute, there-
fore, is the universal foundation of all mysticism; also
of religion and much of the occult.
Animism The theory that all objects have a natural life and
are linked to a separately existing immaterial soul, is supported
by evidence from communicating entities and the psychometric
faculty. It has been advanced as a counter theory to spirit sur-
vival by Alex. Aksakov (q.v.) in his three-point hypothesis
(‘Animism and Spiritism’), and supposes that the medium’s
spirit is alone responsible for the phenomena.

Soul Aura That part of the human aura which radiates the
intensity of spiritual power attained by the individual. It lies
outside of the physical aura, and may extend to some distance
in the case of developed souls. It is perceived as a golden light
radiating from the entire body, by clairvoyant vision.
Spirit Children None are born in the spirit world, but children
who die before maturity are considered to continue their grow-
ing and development in spirit life. Often they help in medium-
ship, acting in the capacity of controls or helpers. Many earth
children are conscious of playmates in spirit, and talk to them
freely. This faculty usually disappears as the child becomes
more sophisticated and engrossed by earthly considerations.

space’. Therefore their world is of a different order. As we are
spirits now, we already know of this non time-space order—
the world of ideas. Spirit beings, to contact our environment do
not have to do anything mysterious physically, like ‘lowering
their vibrations’, they contact us as spirit—‘behind’ our sense
impressions of space and time. The physical order of existence
is perhaps erroneous: a part view only of reality, maybe a
limitation imposed upon us for our instruction and develop-
ment.

An Astrologer Casting a Horoscope
Jacob Boehme (1575-1624), Teutonicus Philosophus, “the shoemaker of
Goerlitz,” from a contemporary woodcut. Though it was long thought that
Boehme’s profound writings on mystical theology were the fruit of personal
inspiration alone, modern scholars are inclined to believe that though he
lacked formal schooling, he was widely read and owed much to his circle of
learned friends, among them Dr. Balthazar Walther, whom the late Albert
Steffen identified as a Rosicrucian, in his essay on Boehme. Dr. Walther gave
the title Aurora to Boehme’s first work. Goethe touches upon the significance
of this title in Faust: “The world of spirits is not shut away.... Up Stu-
dent! bathe, without dismay, Thy earthly breast in morning red!” The Fama,
Confessio and Chymical Wedding all appeared in Boehme’s lifetime,
and he must have known about them and perhaps studied them.

The Hon. Robert Boyle, 1627-1691, pioneer chemist, philosopher, scienti
discoverer of Boyle’s Law, author of many scientific works, including 7
Sceptical Chymist, 1661, founding member of the council of the Royal §
ciety, 1663, and by many considered an even greater figure than Lord Bac
of Verulam. Generally unknown is the fact that in 1659 Boyle introduced
the University of Oxford “the noted chemist and Rosicrucian, Peter Sth:
of Strasbourg” whom Boyle had brought to England to be his tutor. Sth
lived in Boyle's lodgings at Oxford, instructing him “in geometry, philosop
and chemistry.” Among Sthael’s other pupils were Christopher Wren,
mous architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral, John Locke, Fellow of the Ro:
