Introduction Foreword ¢ How to use this manual ‘* Symbols used in this manual + Special nomenclature # symbols used in this manual ! ! WARNING ! CAUTION Decals on the trailer indicate different (more to less severe) hazard levels Please .«read this manual thoroughly Before you operate your new trailer, please read this manual in its entirety. The information will help protect your investment and ensure that the trailer performs to your satisfaction; and some of the information is important to your safety, and must be read and understood to help prevent possible injury to the operator or others. Ifanything in the manual is confusing or hard to understand, please call your dealer or our service department, at 1-800-843- 3324 (U.S. and Canada), for clarification before operating or servicing this equipment. ‘The manual is divided into clearly marked sections, arranged in the order in which the information is most likely to be needed.: Introduction, familiarization, operation, maintenanee/service, replacement parts, ‘accessory/optional equipment installation. ‘The introduction explains the manual, gives general safety information, and gives important details about ‘your specific trailer. Information of special interest Information of special importance has been flagged in this manual. In general, the following safety symbol has been used both in this manual and on the trailer to indicate hazards that either will or may result in personal injury if appropriate care is not taken: Wherever this symbol appears, pay particular attention to the accompanying instructions. Failure to do so can result in injury to the operator of the trailer or to bystanders, Contact our service department if there is anything you do not understand, Decals on the trailer identify potential hazards of three levels of seriousnes Decals with the word "DANGER" in white against a red background indicate that if the instructions on the decal are not followed, the hazard WILL result in severe personal injury or death. These decals are rare, but the hazard is very real and they must never be ignored, Decals which show the word “WARNING?” in black against an orange background indicate that the hazards or unsafe practices noted in their pictures and text could result in severe personal injury or death, “CAUTION” in black against a yellow background ‘means that the hazards and unsafe practices noted could result in minor personal injury or in product or property damage. * Special nomenclature # Symbols used in These warming elements are standard in many industries; look for the this "ollowing variations in this manual manual yy sarery warnine (continued) ELECTRICAL, 4 uszaro CAUTION Meaning: Failure to understand and obey this warning may result in injury to you or to others, Meaning: Failure to understand and obey this warning may result in electrical shock Meaning: Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to your equipment or your trailer +NOTEs identifies information worthy of special attention, most often bearing on proper operation or service of your trailer but not of a nature that would cause damage or injury if the action is not carried out. It is customary to use Right and Left to mean on the right or left of someone oriented to operate the equipment. References in this manual to the right and left sides of the trailer, then, will mean as viewed from the rear of the trailer. In other words, Right refers to the curb side of the trailer, Left to the road side. Table of Contents Since this manual has been custom assembled for your trailer, itis not possible to assign general page numbers. Manual organization and sequence is reflected inthis table of contents. One type is used with the deck and the other is used in the booster and flip axle area BED SHIMS: ‘These shims are used to control the deflection of the deck in relation to the whee! area. With the many varying loads that could be carried on decks of various lengths, the shims are used to level the wheel area to the deck. This ensures that equal loading can be achieved on all of the trailer axles. A large concentrated load will cause the trailer to deflect to a larger degree than a spread out load such as a ‘scraper and will require more shimming between the deck and the wheel area andlor deck extension. ‘These shims are of varying thickness and can be used in many combinations to fine tune the shimming requirement. The proper thickness of shim to use in this location is determined by experiencing the same (or similar load condition and serves to maintain the overall crown of the trailer. In other words, the proper shim should eliminate any dip in the joint without causing any peak at this joint either. The shim between the deck and the wheel area is used to maintain the correct angle of the wheel area as it relates to the deck. The frame of the wheel area should be level with the deck, or angled slightly downward towards the rear, This will ensure even axle loads and allow the booster and flip axles to carry their share of the load. To install any of these shims itis best to raise the traller with the gooseneck and the raising kit and then place a block under the stirrup at the joint you are working with. Loosen or remove the tension retainer at the top if applicable, and then lower the trailer down with the gooseneck and the lowering kit, This will ‘open the joint at the top and allow the shims to be installed. After some experience with cifferent loads, knowing haw much shim to start with will become easier and the shims can be installed while connecting the components together. NOTE: Ifitis known that a booster will be used itis best to have some extra crown in the deckideck extension and extra “drop” in the wheel area at this point because the added leverage of a booster will increase the amount of deflection greatly, AA worwinatt stand clear of ail joints while opening or closing during shim instalation, BOOSTER SHIMS: ‘The purpose of the booster shims is to get the axles at approximately the same ride height as the trailer so there is less chance of operating with the suspension at the extreme limits oftheir travel ‘The best way to spread the joint apart far enough to install shims is to raise the rear of the taller using the raising kit and dumping the alr from the booster. Sometimes the front of the deck will need to be lowered to the ground using the gooseneck to achieve enough opening for the shims. On a mechanical evener beam trailer, the front of the sub frame will need to be blocked to accomplish this. The main thing to achieve on any booster is equal axle loading between all components. Measuring between the top of the axles and the bottom of the frame is @ good check to see how equal they are. If these measurements vary from one axle to the next it wll be a good indication that more or less shim is required in the appropriate joint. WARNINGI!! Extreme care must be taken when a trailer is empty with the required “loaded” shims in place. The trailer is basically in-operable in the unloaded condition ‘Also, shims between the air booster and the trailer may need to be removed when operating through dips oF uneven ground to prevent unstable conditions or overtoading of the trailer and components, THE BELOW ILLUSTRATIONS DEPICT A TRAILER IN A LOADED CONDITION. It is our practice to sometimes bind in entire sets of instructions as they are shipped with the components we use, and in some cases these will include instructions for models or components not included with your particular trailer. It is our hope that by doing this we are providing you with the most complete, accurate, and current information available for the components and systems on your Trail King trailer, Among the vendors whose instructions you might find bound into this section are the following: Anchorlok - Spring brakes Braden - Gear box/cable drum Dana Corp., Parish Div. - Axles Erie - Wheels, brake drums Hendrickson Trailer Suspension Systems - Air suspensions Hutchens Industries, Inc. - Suspension components Koenig Inc. - Winches Kohler - Engines Motor Wheel Corp. - Wheels, brake drums Neway - Air suspensions Prince - Directional control valves Turner - Tandem axle air systems Webb - Wheels
