ui What is It
How do you judge the validity of evidence listened to?
Listening is one of the important skills that you should develop. It requires
critical thinking because you cannot Just listen to someone's speech without
understanding and assessing the truth, relevance, and authenticity of the information
Presented to you.
But how will you know whether or not what you are listening to is actually true
or valid? There are careful steps or ways you can follow to evaluate the validity of
the information or the evidence presented in a listening material.
Scanned with CamScanner1. Identify the speaking situation or the context in which the message is
being sent.
The context is important because it will help set your
expectations of the listening material, For example, you are
listening to a speech about getting healthy. So, you can expect that
the speaker will explain the benefits of being healthy as well as
share tips on how you can become healthy.
However, you have to observe if the speaker is merely giving
‘out information on how to become healthy or if there is another
purpose behind the speech. This may be in the form of a promotion
of a certain product that is new to the market which the speaker
claims will help you become healthy,
2. Evaluate the speaker's credibility.
See if the speaker is qualified to talk about the topic. Check
his or her credentials. A credible speaker will support his or her
ideas with valid evidence and will cite credible sources.
However, it is also important to check if he or she is biased
toward or against something. To determine biases, listen well and
ask yourself if the speaker leaves out something from his or her
speech. Is there information that should have been mentioned or
given but is not there?
3. Analyze the speaker's claims. Test the identifying supporting ideas for
the claims.
What main point is the speaker trying to convey? What
information is he of she using to support that main point? Are they
valid? Are they based on facts? Did he or she use reliable sources?
How will you know these things? The answer is research.
Find information to determine if all the information
presented—especially the main points and supporting details—are
truthful and factual. It is also best to check the source of the
information.

Listen to the TED Talk from Kashfia Rahman entitled, “How Risk-taking
Changes a Teenager's Brain.” Then, answer the questions below. Write your
answers in your notebook or on a separate sheet of paper.
1. How does Rahman answer the central question of her talk?
2. What evidence does she provide to support this main idea?
. How can her claims (about the consequences for students who lacked the

. Does Rahman's choice of evidence to use positively or negatively affect the
way she makes her point? Justify your answer.
5. Would you describe Rahman's talk as effective in making the case for
risk-taking? Defend your answer.
Activity B

online class. Write your answers in your notebook or on a separate sheet of paper.

One effect of the freedom made possible by the Internet is the wide
spread of information resources. However, a listener must approach all these
with the mindset that not everything that is available is credible. A critical
mindset when listening is always preferable to a credulous one that may
easily be misled.
When evaluating a listening material for validity of evidence, the
following questions may be asked:

What I Can Do
The contemporary world has witnessed innumerable accounts of conflict that
happen on a daily basis. Left unresolved, these conflicts escalate from simple to
complex, from conflicts between two people to conflicts involving nations, from
conflicts that can be resolved within a specific time to those conflicts that seemingly
are endless.
You are tasked by an advocacy group to come up with a five-minute video
highlighting the power of dialogue as a means of resolving conflicts. Sample conflicts.
are enumerated on the next page. You may also think of a conflict you can relate
more with. Your output will be posted online.

gender issues;
trust and confidence conflicts; or
goods bought and/or services rendered.
To help you make your five-minute video, look for listening materials that
feature the power of dialogue in resolving the sample conflicts above. Make sure to
check the validity of the evidence presented in each listening material by applying
what you have learned in the discussion.
