LESSON 1: GOOD CITIZENSHIP VALUES

Good citizenship means to conduct oneself in accordance with the rights, duties, and privileges
of being an inhabitant of a geographical location by means of birth or naturalization. It is
important to have a good citizenship because it makes generally a positive society. Good
citizens make our society a far better place by improving the environment that they live in. This
provides everyone with a way of community to a part and a way of pride and responsibility
where they live in.

1. Pagkamaka-Diyos

-The literal English translation of the term is ‘being for God’. In its expansive meaning,
godliness. It is defined as the quality or state of being spiritually pure or virtuous.

Good Citizenship Values of Pagkamaka-Diyos

a. Faith in the Almighty

-Be God fearing and live according to His will.

“Faith without Work is Dead”

“Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God. Whoever says to the mountain, “Be lifted up and thrown
to the sea”, and does not doubt in heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be
done for him”.

b. Respect for Life

-Recognize the absolute value of human life and the human dignity of every person.

“God created man in His image; in the divine image He created him; male and female he

God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify

c. Order

-Respect the human rights and comply with your duties and responsibilities.

d. Work

-To appreciate the value of work.

e. Concern for the Family and Future Generations

-Look after the welfare of your family and future generations.

“From the beginning the Creator “made them male and female” and said, “for this reason a man
shall leave his father and mother and be joined with his wife, and the two shall become one
flesh”. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no
man put asunder.

2. Pagkamaka-Tao

This core value means being sensitive to individual, social, and cultural differences. Moreover, a
person who possesses the core value makatao demonstrates contribution towards solidarity.

Good citizenship values of Pagkamaka-Tao

a. Love - To look after the good and welfare of one another.

“Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; Love is not ill mannered or selfish and
irritable; love does not keep a record of the wrongs: Love is not happy with evil but delights in
the truth. Love never gives up. Love never fails. Loge is eternal...There are faith, hope and love
and the greatest of these is Love.”

b. Freedom

-Assert your right to be able to do the right things.

“For you were called for freedom, brothers, but do not use this freedom as an opportunity for

the flesh; rather, serve one another through love.”

c. Peace

-Live and work together in harmony. Avoid violence as a way of setting disputes.

d. Truth

-Stand for the truth and avoid intrigue and mudslinging.

e. Justice

-Give everyone their due. Do not oppress or take advantage of anyone.

3. Pagkamaka-Bayan

- It consists of unity, wherein Filipinos should work together as a country to form the right
relationships with each other.

Good citizenship values of Pagkamaka-Bayan

a. Unity

-Work together and share with one another.

“Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.

“If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided

against itself, that house will not be able to stand”.

b. Equality

-Treat one another as brothers and sisters being children of one God and one nation.

c. Respect for Law and Government

e. Promotion of the Common Good

-Put the welfare of the greater number of people over one’s own. Do not be greedy and selfish.

4. Pagkamaka-Kalikasan

It is simply showing concern for the environment because love for the environment is part of
being Filipino.

a. Concern for the Environment

-Keep your surroundings clean and conserve our natural resources

“Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all
the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.
