3. IntRobucTION:
The basic purpose of a fan is to move a mass of gas or vapour at a desired velocity. For
achieving this objective there is a slight increase in the gas pressure across the fan
impeller. The main aim remains to move air or gas without any appreciabie increase in
its pressure. The total pressure developed by fan is of order of a few mm of water
gauge.
Tueory:
'n its simplest form, an axial flow fan stage consists of a rotor made up of a number of
blades fitted to the hub. When it is rotated by an electric motor or any other drive, a flow
's established through the rotor. The action of the rotor causes an increase in The
Stagnation pressure of air or gas across it. A cylindrical casing encloses the rotor.
ans and blowers are used in a wide variety of industries. Some of the important
tions are in steam power stations, ventilation system, cooling of electric motors
erators, and many industrial processes.
Axial PAN TEST RIGhis equipment compnses of Axial Flow Fan coupled to a DC motor Power‘ input to the
DC motor is varied by means of a Thyristor controlled DC drive to vary the RPM of
motor, A RPM Indicator With Proximity sensor indicates the RPM of Fan. Pitdt Tube and
manometer is provided in the delivery line. Static pressure, dynamic pressure and
differential pressure can be measured by valves provided on manometer. A muti tube
manometer is provided fo measure the pressure head across the duct ‘ft control
valve is provided at the outlet of the delivery line to vary the air flow rate. Electrical input
can be measured by energy meter and stop watch.
6. Urumes Reauireo:
61 Electricity Supply: Single Phase, 220 V AC, 50 Hz, 5-15 Amp. combined socket
with earth connection. Earth voltage should be less than 5 volts.
6.2. Floor Area Required: 3.0m x 0.75 m.
6.2 Diesel as manometer fluid (50 ml)
7. _ EXpERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:
7.1 Startins Procepure:
7.4.1. Fill manometer fluid in U-Tube manometer up to half of its level.
7.1.2. Fill manometer fluid in reservoir of multi tube manometer up to half of its
level by adjusting the reservoir tank.
7.13 Ensure that ON/OFF switch given on the panel is at OFF position. Now
switch ON the main power supply.
7.14 Open the valve V; for air flow control.
7.1.5 Switch ON the motor.
74.6 Set the RPM of the fan with the help of knob, provided on the electric
panel. a
7.4.7 Release the air from manometer by operating the valves V2, Vs, Vs & Vs
7.4.8 Gradually open the valves V» & Vs of pressure tapings (Ps & Pa).
7.49 Open the valves Vs & Vsto atmosphere

Close both the opened ee opens the remaining both valves.
Measure the pressure head af-ross the duct using pressure tapings P; —
P, with the help multi tube manometer.
Record the power consumption by means of energy meter and stop
watch.
Repeat the experiment for different RPM of the fan.
Repeat the experiment for vatve positions.
i) Don’t Close the fluid supply valve V; during experiment.
ii) Don’t open more than two valves of U-Tube manometer except air. release
operation time during the experiment.
iii) Don’t restrict the atmospheric pressure tapings during the experiment.
7.2 CLosinc PRocEDURE:
7.2.1 When experiment is over, adjust DC drive knob at ZERO.
7.2.2 Switch OFF the motor.

10. Precaution & Maintenance InstRucTIONS:
10.1 Never run the apparatus if power supply is less than 200 Volts and above.230
Volts
10.2 Always keep apparatus free from dust.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
44.1 If Fan is not blowing the air, revolution of the motor may be reverse. Change the
electric connection of motor to change the revolutions.
11.2. If panel is not showing input, check the fuse and main supply.
44.3 If overload (OL) indicates on the panel and motor stop moving, reduce the load
by opening the flow control valve at the outlet.
