Tech (MECHATRONICS) Year: Ul Semester: V a Academic Year: 2017-2018 ‘Subject: Design of Machine Elements Date: 22 November 2017 Re-Examination Instruetions: Candidates should read carefully the instructions printed on the question paper and on the cover of the Answer Book, which is provided for their use. Note: Question No. 1 is compulsory. Out of remaining questions attempt any four questions. Inall five questions to be attempted All questions carry equal marks Answer to each new question to be started on a fresh page. Figures in brackets on the right hand side indicate full marks. Assume suitable data if necessary. Use of PSG Design data book is permitted. Praveen Qu Answer any four of the following (12) (@) What do you understand by the phrase “Design of Machine Elements”? Explain step of design of Machine Element. (®) Explain the material selection procedure in design of machine elements, (©) Explain phenomenon of stress concentration. What are the ways to reduce it? (@ Why factor of safety is important in machine design? Explain briefly. (©) State advantages of welded joints over riveted joints. (® Compare Gear drives with belt drives. Q2. (@) Enlist types of keys. What types of stresses are induced on keys? Write (4) corresponding formulae, Q3. Qa. Qs () (a) @) (b) ‘The layout of a transmission shaft carrying two pulleys B and C and supported on bearings A and D is shown in fig. Power is supplied to the shaft by means of vertical belt on the pulley B, which is then transmitted to the pulley C carrying a horizontal belt. The maximum tension in the belt on the pulley B is 2.5 KN. The angle of wrap for both the pulleys is 180° and the coefficient of friction is 0.24. The shaft is made of plain carbon steel 30C8 (Sy = 400 Nimm?) and the factor of safety is 3. Determine the shaft diameter on strength basis Design a cotter joint subjected to a tensile load of 30KN. The material used is earbon steel for which the following allowable stresses may be used. The load is applied statically. Tensile stress = 50 MPa ; shear stress = 35 MPa and crushing stress = 90 MPa. A railway wagon moving at a velocity of 1.5 mV/s is brought to rest by a bumper consisting of two helical springs arranged in parallel. The mass of wagon is 1500 kg. ‘The springs are compressed by 150 mm in bringing the wagon to rest. The spring index can be taken as 6. The springs made of oil-hardened and tempered stee! wire with ultimate tensile strength of 1250 N/mm? and modulus of rigidity of $1370 N/mm. The permissible shear stress for the spring wire can be taken as 50% of the ultimate tensile strength, Design the spring and calculate 1) Wire Diameter 2) Mean Coil diameter 3) number of active coils 4) total number of coils 5) solid length 6) free length 7) Pitch of the coil. A plate 75 mm wide and 12.5 mm thick is joined with another plate by a single transverse weld and a double paralle! fillet weld as shown in Fig. The maximum tensile and shear stresses are 70 MPa and 56 MPa respectively, Find the length of cach parallel fillet weld, if the joint is subjected to static loading, & P Explain Caulking and Fullering process in riveted joints. ahs ® (12) (12) (8) @) 2.6. (a) ) Q7. @ © Itis required to design a pair of spur gears with 20° full depth involute teeth based on the Lewis equation. The velocity factor is to be used to account for dynamic load, The pinion shaft is connected to a 10 kW 1440 rpm motor. The starting torque of ‘motor is 150% of the rated torque. The speed reduction is 4: 1. The pinion as well as the gear is made of plain carbon steel 40C8 (Sut = 600 N/mm2). The FOS can be taken as 1.5. Design the gears, specify their dimensions and suggest suitable surface hardness for the gears. A pair of spur gears consists of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 120 teeth gear. The module is 4 mm, Calculate 1) the centre distance 2)The pitch circle diameters of the pinion and gear 3) Addendum and Dedendum 4) the tooth thickness 5) The gear ratio tis required to select a flat belt drive for a compressor running at 720 rpm, which is driven by a 25kW, 1440 rpm motor. Space is available for a center distance of 3 m. The belt is open-type. What are the advantages and disadvantages of belt drives over the other type of drives? 413 (8) (@) (8) @)
