Dentistry is a discipline in which there is a necessity of acquiring
precise information about tooth structure and surrounding soft
tissues. Photogrammetry is one of these methods. It is a mathematical
technique that creates three-dimensional coordinates of precise points
identified from various images of the same object acquired at
different angles. This technique may be a low-cost substitute for
traditional scanning.
With advancements in the field of dentistry, there is a need of
acquiring digital data about patient’s teeth and surrounding structures
by a reliable, reproducible and cost effective method especially in
developing countries where patients are barely able to afford dental
treatment. Although there is adequate research available supporting
the accuracy of model lab scanners and intraoral scanners but their
expense restrain dental professionals of their use on regular basis. So
other techniques to acquire digital models should be taken into
consideration. Tooth preparation is also one of the significant clinical
procedures in prosthetic dentistry which provides necessary
conditions for fixed prosthesis construction. A digital scan is essential
for digitally manufactured prosthesis. Evaluating the accuracy of a
prosthesis manufactured by a digital scan obtained by
photogrammetry is imperative for validation of this technique.
Objective:
The objective of this research was to compare the accuracy and
precision of digital scans of a plaster model (PM) obtained by
photogrammetry technique, model scanner and intraoral scanner.
Also evaluate its different uses in modern day dentistry.
Materials and methods:
In this research, we evaluate photogrammetry technique for use in
routine dental practice. First, we describe a procedure for obtaining
3D reconstructions of teeth based on plaster model photographs taken
with a mobile phone camera and DSLR and using commercial
software on a standard laptop. Then, compare the results qualitatively
and quantitatively with an intra-oral 3D scanner and model scanner.
We assess its numerous applications, in particular, we tested that
whether the subsequent 3D reconstruction can be used to design and
fabricate a milled zirconia crown or not.
