Beginning
Mary Shelley started
writing "Frankenstein"
when she was 18. The first
edition was published in
London on the first of
January of 1818, by an
anonymous author, when
she was 20.
Education
Shelley became educated
by herself. Her father was
a writer and journalist, so
he taught her. She had
interactions with
intellectuals of her time
too, including Percy
Bysshe, her future
husband.
Tragedy
Mary wrote a magazine in
1815, where she describe
the death of Clara, who died
shortly after birth, her first
daughter with Percy.
Wedding
Mary Shelley and Percy
Bysshe married at the end
of 1816, after the suicide of
Percy Shelley's first wife,
Harriet.
Dedication
"Frankenstein" was
dedicated to her father, the
English writer and
philosopher William Godwin.
Her mother
Mary Wollstonecraft
criticizes in "A Vindication: of
the Rights of Woman" (1792)
the social norms that relegate
women to inferior roles and
defends their moral and
intellectual advancement.

Bysshe Shelley met in 1814
when she was 16 years old.
Percy Shelley visited the
Godwin household, where
Mary was living with
William Godwin, her father.
Inspiration
Shelley was inspired to
write “Frankenstein” after
imagining a scientist who
created life and was
horrified by what he had
made.
Publication
The first edition of
"Frankenstein" was published
anonymously in 1818, hiding
Mary Shelley as the author.
With the years the book
became a revered classic in
literature, especially in the
science fiction genre.
Authorship
It was thought that the work
was written by her husband.
He said that his contributions
were minor, so the previous
theory was discarded.
