❖ LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Japanese term manga, “man”, meaning “whimsical or impromptu”, and “ga”, meaning “pictures”,
together forming 漫画. (playful & interesting visuals)
Has a broad range of genres MAINLY about action-adventure, romance, comedy, drama,
science-fiction, and fantasy.
Manga dates back to the 12th century, but there have been many disagreements Modern
manga as we now, know has been historically and culturally influenced by two factors—pre-War
(Meiji and pre-Meiji) Japanese culture and arts, and the events following WWII.
Earlier Versions
- (Scroll of Frolicking Animals) is attributed to the monk Toba Sōjō and is at the
Kōzan-ji temple in Kyoto. There are four scrolls in all.
- 1814 Katsushika Hokusai’s Manga book, is said to be among the first examples
of the comics form in history.
