Definition & Origin

Japanese term manga, “man”, meaning “whimsical or impromptu”, and “ga”, meaning “pictures”,
together forming 漫画. (playful & interesting visuals)

Has a broad range of genres MAINLY about action-adventure, romance, comedy, drama,
science-fiction, and fantasy.

Manga dates back to the 12th century, but there have been many disagreements Modern

Otaku: Manga enthusiasts. Although for most Japanese, it actually has a negative connotation.
Writer Nakamori Akio notoriously popularized the term in a 1983 magazine article sharply
deriding the subculture, pushing the meaning of otaku towards the term “dork,” only much more
insulting and forceful. Later on, the term otaku took on yet more negativity after the hideous
murders committed by Tsutomu Miyazaki in the late 1980s. Miyakzi was a serial killer who came
to be known as the Otaku Murderer, due to his extensive collection of anime and manga.

Difference between American Comic Books and Manga


Examples of Manga:

Earlier Versions
- (Scroll of Frolicking Animals) is attributed to the monk Toba Sōjō and is at the
Kōzan-ji temple in Kyoto. There are four scrolls in all.

- 1814 Katsushika Hokusai’s Manga book, is said to be among the first examples
of the comics form in history.
